In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In a large number of nations, family members have been employed together in their own business. I believe the pros of working together in family business overweighs the cons because it is less stressful to work in a homely environment as well as there's no space for trust issues on each other. Although to some extend it gives hard time during family emegencies.

To begin with, if couples or siblings are working together in their own business it reduces work stress among them because resposibilities are divided and there's no doubt that family member is more reliable than an outside employee. Moreover, trust issues does not bother a person

while working with their loved ones. As a result, it creates very positive and stress-free working environment. For instance, my father and my uncle are running a restaurant together in India from last ten years, it going very smoothly as whenever there is any health issue to one of them the other person took all the responsibility.

However, sometimes if any mishappening has occured in family then its really hard to take off for all the members. Even during family functions as well one family member has to miss the function due to the work. For example, in my marriage my uncle was not able to attend all the family functions. But I believe this little hard time is far more better than remainning in work stress everyday.

In conclusion, I realise working together is far more beneficial in regards of stress and work load, eventhough sometimes family members have to miss some important family functions, but still its more advantageous than working alone in family business.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, taking a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant personal examples, such as the mention of a family restaurant in India and a wedding attendance conflict. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise regarding trust and stress, and the conclusion contains minor repetition of the body points. Nevertheless, the main position is maintained throughout, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. Looking closely at the development, the support is adequate and directly addresses the prompt, leading to a solid Band 7 rating.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the introduction, the advantages, the disadvantages, and the final summary. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as "To begin with", "Moreover", "As a result", and "However". However, some referencing is slightly faulty or mechanical, as seen in phrases like "trust issues does not bother a person while working with their loved ones" and awkward transition handling. Furthermore, punctuation errors in paragraph boundaries slightly hinder smooth cohesion. Overall, the organizational structure is logical, matching the descriptors for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as "homely environment", "responsibilities", and "mishappening". However, there are noticeable word choice errors, spelling mistakes, and collocation issues throughout the text. For instance, "overweighs" should be "outweighs", "to some extend" should be "to some extent", "emegencies" is misspelled, and "remainning" contains a double consonant error. While these errors do not impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey straightforward ideas, fitting the criteria for Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures using conjunctions and dependent clauses, such as "Although to some extend it gives hard time during family emegencies" and "whenever there is any health issue to one of them the other person took all the responsibility." However, there are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement ("trust issues does not", "pros... overweighs"), prepositions ("working together in family business", "in regards of"), and tense consistency. Punctuation errors, such as missing commas and run-on phrasing, also occur. These errors occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader, placing the grammar performance firmly at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
