In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Businesses are becoming more popular around the world. In many nations, family members are working together. I agree with this trend. This essay will discuss the advantages of working together in family businesses.

There are several benefits of having a family member in the business. One of them is trust. This is because it is hard to find a trustworthy person for a business; having a family member helps with that problem. Therefore, having a person who is part of the family is beneficial for business. Moreover, family members can work hard for their own business. To explain, hiring someone can become challenging, as they can not performe same as a family member. As they are not personally attached to the business. Furthermore, family members do not live the business in the time of crisis, whereas a hired employee can leave easily in time of need.

There are some disadvantages also. Family members can be lazy. This is because they think they own the business, and they do not need to work hard for it. Therefore, having family members can be difficult for the business. To add, different family person has their own way to run a business. To explain it, they always have difficulty making decisions because of different ideas. It will eventually affect the business.

In conclusion, running a business is not a simple task; however, having a member of the family is not only trustworthy but also beneficial for the business. However, it also has some disadvantages, such as laziness and more. Still, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, fulfilling the requirement to give a reasoned answer. Your position is clear from the beginning and maintained throughout the essay. The ideas presented, such as trust and loyalty versus laziness and decision-making conflicts, are relevant to the topic. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on employees leaving during a crisis is stated briefly without much extension, and phrases like 'and more' in the conclusion lack specific support. To reach a higher band, the ideas need to be more fully expanded with deeper explanations or more concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the argument, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate main ideas, such as grouping the benefits in the second paragraph and the drawbacks in the third. Cohesive devices are employed to connect sentences, using words like 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and cohesion can feel slightly mechanical and repetitive, particularly with the transition phrases. Additionally, the linking between some sentences within the paragraphs occasionally feels abrupt, such as the sudden shift in the third paragraph regarding decision-making differences.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your main points clearly. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'trustworthy', 'challenging', and 'crisis', but much of the language remains basic and repetitive, utilizing simple descriptors like 'good', 'bad', and repeating words such as 'business' and 'family members' frequently. There are also some minor word choice and phrasing issues, such as 'performe' (spelling error) and 'live the business' instead of 'leave the business'. The lexical range is sufficient for a Band 6, but lacks the flexibility and precision needed for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the response. There are instances of correct complex structures, such as using conditional or causal links like 'This is because it is hard to find...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings that catch the reader's attention, such as 'as they can not performe same as a family member', 'different family person has their own way', and the missing article in 'in time of need'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but minor errors like the missing space after a period ('ideas. It') occur. Communication is not impeded by these errors, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
