In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Most of the families prefer to run their family business together in the developed countires. Because they think working as a employee better to run own business with the help of other family members. It is more benefit to the coming generation.

First of all, people do not need any employee for working with the family because normally in the families 7-8 members present all the time. They can easily manage everything according to their budget, so they can save more money for the future. Secondly, there is no trust issue while you are working in a family business. Moreover, they can set their schedules according to their avaiability. For example, in my town a family run a business, they started it from a single shop now they manage 3-4 stores and earn a good money.

Additionally, stolen or lifting from the stores is impossible bacause everyone doing with the honesty, so no issue with the inventory.

On the other side, it has a drawback to run family business, because they all are belonging to the same family. For instance, if any occassion in the family they have to shut off their business for few hours to celebrate the function with the family.

In conclusion, with more advantage it has some disadvantage to run a family business. With the growth of family everyone want seprate their life

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a basic position. However, the word count is 227 words, which falls short of the mandatory 250-word minimum, resulting in a necessary penalty under Task Achievement. Ideas such as saving money, trust, and closing early for family occasions are introduced but remain under-developed and lack sufficient elaboration. For instance, the example provided of the local store expanding lacks the depth expected for a fully extended argument. While the main aspects of the topic are touched upon, the lack of length and limited development restrict the score to Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into basic paragraphs, including an introduction, body paragraphs covering advantages and disadvantages, and a brief conclusion. However, the overall logical progression is somewhat disjointed. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical or repetitive manner, such as 'First of all', 'Secondly', and 'Additionally', and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like 'everyone doing with the honesty'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final paragraph breaks off abruptly and fails to provide a cohesive wrap-up of the essay's ideas. These issues place the response firmly in the Band 5.0 category for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, such as 'good money', 'family business', and 'store'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, including 'countires' instead of countries, 'avaiability' instead of availability, 'stolen or lifting' instead of shoplifting, and 'seprate their life' instead of separate their lives. These errors and the limited range of vocabulary occasionally cause strain for the reader, aligning the lexical resource with the Band 5.0 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex structures contain significant errors. Examples of grammatical inaccuracies include 'Most of the families prefer to run their family business together in the developed countires. Because they think working as a employee better to run own business...' which features sentence fragments and missing articles. Other errors involve subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, such as 'if any occassion in the family they have to shut off'. While simple sentences are generally understandable, frequent grammatical errors impede fluency and constrain the score to Band 5.0.
