Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern epoch, more individuals are confused about deciding of their career in between a job and a business. It is noticeable in many countries that people who come from families that have businesses will join their family business and work together with family members. From my perspective, this notion offers more benefits than drawbacks. I will elaborate in the subsequent paragraphs.

To commence with, the most significant benefit for family businesses to have more family members in the same venture is trust. If the business owner has more family members in the business, then family members work in their own business rather than working for somebody else's business. This thought process can build more trust among them. As a consequence, the business can achieve its vision more effectively. However, there is a downside of it; there might be a chance to affect personal relationships because of a little conflict or disagreement over any decision in the business. Thus, it is a little difficult to keep work and personal relation different according to place or time.

Additionally, another core merit of having family members in the family business is communication. People can connect easily at the business and process each other's thoughts easily and effectively. Which help businesses to quick communication with clients' inquiries. This can be proven by greater customer service also. However, there is a demerit to having family members with the same language ability is losing foreign business opportunities. It is a fact that many businesses might face diffculty to broden their business in other countries because of the language barrier.

To recapitulate, family businesses get more benefits from having more family members in the business.

The major benefits are better trust and communication. There are a few demerits associated with it also. However, they can be negligible with a better road map of business.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear position from the outset that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas regarding trust and communication as major advantages are relevant, though they are somewhat repetitive and could be extended further. The disadvantages are also introduced, such as the potential strain on personal relationships and language barriers, although the latter point is slightly unconvincing in the context of family businesses generally. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed, and the ideas are sufficiently supported to meet the requirements of a Band 6.5 or solid 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, including an introduction, two body paragraphs focusing on pros and cons, and a concise conclusion. Logical progression is evident through transitional phrases such as 'To commence with', 'Additionally', and 'To recapitulate'. However, cohesive devices can be somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the fragment sentence 'Which help businesses to quick communication...' which disrupts the flow between sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately, resulting in a generally coherent overall arrangement that satisfies the Band 6 criteria.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'subsequent paragraphs', 'notion', and 'demerit'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'deciding of their career in between a job and a business' and 'process each other's thoughts easily'. Spelling and typographical errors also occur, such as 'diffculty' and 'broden'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a Band 6 level of lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure with conditional and relative clauses. However, there are persistent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as the fragment 'Which help businesses to quick communication with clients' inquiries.' and preposition issues like 'conflicts or disagreement over any decision in the business'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching Band 7. The errors rarely impede overall comprehension, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
