Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many counrties family members come together to operate family bussinesses. It is rather challenging to provide a conclusion if there are more advantages or disadvantages to this. Hence, I will be diving into each one with more details to understand it more appropriately.

Family members who grow up together know more about each other than anyone else. There is a particularly special bond between the family members and more understanding. During difficult situations it is the family who comes together to help each other. It can be easier to start business with the people who are close to one another as It creats a sense of reliability. Often times there is significant negotiation in terms and conditions which can be questionable in business partnership. Both parties in business is expected to have an input of equal percentages of financial support but it is mostly negotiated between family members which usually the cause of fight.

As business partners, the first step is to establish trust and creating contracts with terms and conditions. However if the transparency is not maintained in contracts and in-person can lead to serious consequences of broken relations and loses. Bussiness involve money, which is generally seen as the trouble-maker. As witnessed by generations, whenever there is money involved it can shread the perfectly build relationships and trust to pieces.

To conclude, the business between family members has more disadvantages than advantages. Therefore it is safe to say that family members should not do business together to protect the peaceful relationship that the members have with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, ultimately taking a clear position in the conclusion that disadvantages outweigh advantages. The ideas presented, such as the special bond between family members versus the complications of money and contract transparency, are relevant to the prompt. However, some arguments remain somewhat under-developed and lack specific, concrete examples from the writer's own experience as requested in the prompt. For instance, the discussion regarding financial negotiations and arguments over equal percentages is generalised rather than supported by a clear illustration. Nevertheless, a clear position is maintained throughout the essay. This performance aligns well with Band 6 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a final conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the topic. Cohesive devices are employed, such as referencing ('Both parties in business', 'However if the transparency') and transitional phrases ('To conclude'). However, some cohesive links feel slightly mechanical or faulty, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun reference in 'which usually the cause of fight'. Furthermore, the transitional flow between sentences could be smoother in places, which places this response comfortably at Band 6.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and topical phrases like 'business partnership', 'financial support', and 'transparency'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('counrties', 'bussinesses', 'creat-s' instead of creates, 'shread' instead of shred) and some inappropriate word choices, such as 'fight' instead of 'disputes' or 'conflicts'. These errors indicate a Band 6 level, as the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main messages clearly despite the lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures ('However if the transparency is not maintained...', 'whenever there is money involved...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Both parties in business is expected'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('which usually the cause of fight'). While these errors are present and occasionally require the reader to re-read a sentence, they rarely impede overall communication. This mix of structures and error frequency is indicative of a Band 6 performance.
