Student answer (Band 6.0)

We see many people start their business with their family. While this might be beneficial for the business, I believe there are more disadvantages than benefits in the setting.

The main corner of family businesses is the risk involved in having single source of income. In this fast paced market business, either boom suddenly or get unsuccessful quickly investing majority of their money on the business might lead to big loss if all the members of the business are relying on the profit of their product or service then it can result into unhealthy financial situation.

Another risk in the family business is probability of family disputes. Usually startups and Enterprises have multiple business partners a survey on Indian startups shows 76% of business stopped functioning because of the partners did not share the same goal. This means a family members are not on the same page can lead to closing the business.

Despite this, there are some advantages of working together in family business. To illustrate 92% of people trust their family members more than their friends or colleagues according to an online forum where there is a trust there is a way to resolve any issue. Additionally family business give more flexibility for the members to make major decision. Each employee has transparency, and it is easy to put our opinions in front of our family members.

Thus family business looks attractive option for several reasons that are mentioned about that are big disadvantages in working with our family because it might affect their relationships in case of any arguments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear position that there are more disadvantages. The ideas presented are generally relevant, such as the risks of financial reliance and family disputes, countered by the benefits of trust and flexibility. However, some arguments lack full development or rely on unsupported statistics, such as the specific percentages cited. While the position is clear throughout, the development could be more thorough to reach higher bands. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The text exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the issue, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, such as financial risks, family disputes, and advantages. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, with missing punctuation and awkward transitions like 'The main corner of family businesses' and 'Thus family business looks attractive option'. Referencing is not always clear, and connective devices are occasionally inadequate. This corresponds to a Band 5.5 or 6.0, where cohesion is present but mechanical and referencing lacks precision.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'transparency' and 'flexibility'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'main corner' instead of 'main cornerstone', 'fast paced market business', and 'get unsuccessful quickly'. There are also frequent missing words and minor lexical slips, such as 'make major decision' instead of 'decisions'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary use firmly at the Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain punctuation and grammatical errors. For example, run-on sentences are common, such as '...business, either boom suddenly or get unsuccessful quickly investing majority of their money on the business might lead to big loss if all the members...'. Articles, prepositions, and subject-verb agreements are frequently missing or incorrect, as seen in 'a family members are not on the same page' and 'family business give more flexibility'. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear, justifying a Band 5.5 score.
