Student answer (Band 6.0)

In some countries, It is common for family members to work together in a family business. Although this kind of business might have some disadvantages but I believe that working with family members has more advantages as it build trust, co-operation and long-term commitment among family members.

One of the major advantages is trust between the employees. Family members usually knows each other and they trust one another loyalty and decisions. Another benefit is long-term commitments. Working in the family business and investing one's time, money, and knowledge helps to make relations even more stronger and business grows generation to generation. Furthermore, family support in difficult period. For example, If a family business faces downfall they can help between themselves financially and emotionally which helps them to understand each other deeply as well as they can adjust in less salaries.

There are also some disadvantages of running a family business together. One of the main reason is lack of ideas. For instance, each family member brought up in the same environment and might have same sense of understanding and similar way to tackle a problem which creates many obstacles because employees from different background, families and environment has various ideas and skills as compared to people of a family. Along with that there may be wrong fit of employees in a particular position and they might not give their best in that role.

In conclusion, there are few cons of runnig a family business together but it has many advantages. The disadvanges can be neglected if the business runs professionally and appreciate each others work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as trust, long-term commitments, and financial support, as well as drawbacks like a lack of diverse ideas and potential wrong fits in roles. However, some of these ideas lack full extension and deep support. For example, the mention of family support during a downfall is a good point, but the explanation remains somewhat generalized. The progression is clear, yet the development in certain body paragraphs could be more thoroughly explored with specific real-world examples rather than brief, hypothetical ones. Overall, the task is adequately fulfilled to meet the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is generally coherent and exhibits an overall clear arrangement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, advantages, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the major advantages', 'Another benefit', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Referencing is mostly clear, such as 'they can help between themselves', though occasional lapses occur where the logical flow between sentences becomes slightly strained, particularly in the discussion on differing backgrounds and environments. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'co-operation', 'long-term commitment', 'financial support', and 'obstacles'. There are noticeable attempts to use less common vocabulary, but these are sometimes accompanied by lexical or collocation inaccuracies, such as 'trust one another loyalty' instead of 'loyalty to one another', 'difficult period' instead of 'difficult periods', and 'runnig' as a spelling error in the conclusion. Word choice is generally sufficient to convey meaning without impeding communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.0 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'Although this kind of business might have some disadvantages but I believe...' (which contains a redundancy error by pairing 'Although' with 'but'). Other grammatical inaccuracies include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'Family members usually knows each other' and prepositional awkwardness like 'help between themselves'. Punctuation is mostly functional. While complex sentences are attempted, they frequently contain errors that require the reader to occasionally re-read parts of the text, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors for grammar.
