IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic:
In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In today's era, when talking about the working profession of the family members, it is generally seen that they tie in family business in multiple nations. While discussing the benefits and drawbacks of such an aspect, I believe advantages surpass disadvantages to the large extent, which I will discuss in the forthcoming paragraphs with strong examples.
The major merit of working in family business develops numerous skills, such as decision-making and many more, which enhances family ties between generations. Youngsters not only gain relatable knowledge from their guardians but also have unspoken support when they face any unforeseen difficulties. To cite an example, multibillion-dollar empire of Ambani Group of Industries, built by Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani, in which both his sons invested their skills and talents throughout their life to make Mr. Ambani proud. They gained both moral and practical lessons from their father to establish the empire. As a result, many families look after them even today.
The detrimental effect of working in family business by all the family members would be no exposure to the job market. People from the same household never experience the struggle of local people, who apply for multiple jobs, getting selected for the interview, how they prepare for it and finally the feeling of being appointed in a role that they desired for. Moreover, if the business struggle or faces any loss, consequences will be hard as that is the only source of income for all the individuals in the family.
To conclude, well developed family business brings various perks to the members of the family to join and continue working for their lifetime regardless of relying on salary based work. According to my perspective, benefits certainly outweigh the drawbacks of such a measure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and presents a clear personal position stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported, notably using the example of the Ambani Group of Industries to illustrate the transfer of skills and knowledge across generations. However, some arguments could be further developed, such as the broader economic implications. The student maintains a clear position throughout, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5, leaning towards Band 7 given the clear development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing merits and drawbacks respectively, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While discussing', 'To cite an example', and 'To conclude', although some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'detrimental effect of working in family business by all the family members would be'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, ensuring an overall coherent arrangement that allows the reader to follow the argument easily. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'multibillion-dollar empire', 'unforeseen difficulties', and 'regardless of relying on salary based work'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'tie in family business' instead of 'engage in family businesses', and 'if the business struggle' instead of 'struggles'. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded, placing the lexical performance comfortably within the Band 6 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional statements (e.g., 'Moreover, if the business struggle or faces any loss...'). There are several noticeable grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the business struggle', 'benefits certainly outweigh') and preposition errors ('to the large extent'). Punctuation has occasional minor flaws, such as missing spaces after commas. Because these errors do not impede overall communication, the grammar fits the Band 6 criteria.
