Student answer (Band 6.0)

In various countries, family business are taking care by the family members as they all work together. I think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages like convinience and building strong family relationship while on the other side it has disadvantages like dependency.

One of the most significant advantages of having family businesses is convinient. Once the family member is in his teenage, rather than finding jobs in the competitive market, he starts working into his family business alongwith other family members. Also the businesses do not need to hire more labours from outside and paying them salary instead family members can help each other and reduce employment cost. In this type of businesses, family members work hard to make business more profitable as they are also the owner of the business.

Another advantage of having family business is strong family relationship. People spend more time with their family members which facilitates them in better understanding and transparency in their relationship which could not be possible if they work in other world. They respect the feelings of each other which create a strong bond among them. Moreover, in case of any emergency they can support each other irrespective of the fact that the help is financially or emotionally.

On the other side critics believe that there are few disadvanatges of having family businesses is dependenc. When people know that they will join family business in future, they become lethargic and donot concentrate on study. Morever, when people join there family business there will be no work life balance because even at home people start discussing about the businesses.

In conclusion, although there should be no work life balance, family businesses have swere advantages which is significantly important is convinience and strong family relationships.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses. The position is clear from the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning convenience, reducing employment costs, building strong family relationships, and the potential downside of dependency and poor work-life balance. For instance, the writer explains how working together helps family members respect each other's feelings and provide emotional or financial support in emergencies. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalise or under-develop certain points, and some minor task ambiguities appear, such as the concluding sentence stating 'there should be no work life balance', which contradicts the body paragraph. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing it at a solid Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, featuring an introduction, distinct body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'One of the most significant advantages', 'Another advantage', and 'On the other side'. However, cohesion is at times faulty or mechanical. For example, referencing and transitional phrases can be awkward, as seen in 'On the other side critics believe that there are few disadvanatges of having family businesses is dependenc.' Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but logical progression within paragraphs occasionally stumbles due to phrasing issues. These features align well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student attempts a range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, including terms like 'competitive market', 'profitable', 'transparency', 'lethargic', and 'work life balance'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'convinience' instead of convenience, 'convinient' instead of convenient, 'labours' instead of labour, 'swere' instead of severe, and 'dependenc' instead of dependency. Furthermore, collocation is occasionally strained, such as 'family business are taking care by the family members'. While these errors are frequent, they do not severely impede communication, as the writer's meaning generally remains clear. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over multi-clause structures, such as 'Once the family member is in his teenage, rather than finding jobs in the competitive market, he starts working into his family business...' However, there are frequent grammatical errors in tense, preposition usage, and article placement, such as 'working into his family business', 'paying them salary instead family members can help', 'irrespective of the fact that the help is financially or emotionally', and 'donot concentrate on study'. Additionally, awkward phrasing like 'there should be no work life balance' in the conclusion shows grammatical and semantic confusion. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
