Student answer (Band 6.0)

In a significant number of countries, families are engaged in setup their own family businesses, rather than opting for nine to five traditional jobs. Reasons are simple: more fexibility, complete authorisation, trust and continue process of learning. Therefore, family businesses have more merits than demerits.

Initiating any business is not a cup of tea. It requires investment, time, strategy and knowledge of public relation. It take years and years of hard work to setup and run family businesses. Despite risks involved many people opt for businesses rather than traditional jobs. Though, running any enterprises is not easy, but it gives you the flexibilty of working. For example, if a person owns a shop, than the person is not under obligation to keep it open for 10-12 hours. The owner can decide the time to open and shut the shop, which can be calculated on the basis of peak and not-so-peak hours. Furthermore, when we talk about the businesses, trust is most important factor to run a business. When a person takes the charge of a family business, trust comes as bounus. As family members are more trustworthy than anyone employed from outside. Having trust on each other, reduces the stress to maximum extent, making business to run smoothly.

Another factor, why people are more interested in carrying forward their family businesses as legacy is the authorisation. They don't have to take permission from outsider to take any desicion. Rather members sit together, discuss the issues and come up with the common solution. Thus, problems can be solved much faster without damaging the reputation of business. One of my friend, who used to work in a private company with the package of 15 lakhs per annum, decide to quit the job. He later became part of his own family business of sweets and confectionaries. He held degree in MBA, and hence, he used his own knowledge to expand and increase the sales of family-owned business. Today, his family business is having more than 18 oulets throughout the country and one of the successful business of its own. Now, he love putting hardwork and efforts for his own business and also get recognised, which he lacked in his 6 years of private job.

To conclude, members working together in a family business not only work as a team, but they also recognise and appreciate the efforts made by each other. Additionally, flexibility of working also helps them to spend quality time with each others.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt directly by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages, ultimately taking a clear position that family businesses have more merits than demerits. Key ideas such as flexibility, trust, and autonomy are introduced and supported with explanations and a relevant personal example about a friend. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise and lack deeper nuance regarding potential conflicts in family businesses. The position is maintained throughout the essay, and the conclusion neatly summarises the main points. Despite minor areas where ideas could have been further extended, the task is successfully and comprehensively addressed, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped into coherent paragraphs, moving from an introduction to flexibility, trust, autonomy, an extended example, and a final conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Another factor', and 'Thus' are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the text, although referencing is occasionally slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct thoughts into well-defined blocks. While cohesion is generally clear and effective, minor instances of awkward linking and referencing prevent the response from achieving a higher band descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'authorisation', 'confectionaries', and 'reputation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'fexibility', 'bounus', 'desicion', and 'oulets'. Collocations are sometimes unconventional, such as 'continue process of learning' instead of 'continuous process of learning' or 'package of 15 lakhs per annum' which borders on informal translation. While the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning, these frequent lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors limit the score to a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'is engaged in setup their own' instead of 'setting up', 'It take years' instead of 'It takes years', and 'than the person is not under obligation' instead of 'then the person'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur frequently, they rarely impede communication. The control of grammar is inconsistent, featuring both well-constructed complex sentences and basic structural slips, aligning well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
