In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Family members work a group in their own company in some countries. In my opinion, family businesses have more advantages rather than disadvantages. If group of people own a same business then there are major chances of huge expansion. In worse case, if it fails then it could lead to debt.

Firstly, individuals who started their company in early ages mostly prefer to their relatives while offering equity. This is the primary reason that they do not reject and work passionately without watching hours in the clock. Therefore, they can build a successful venture and make it more profitable. For example, one of the famous billionaire "Mukesh Ambani" who owns Reliance firm in India. All of his family members are working for different departments in Reliance and still it is growing in all the sectors.

Secondly, if family organization is not running smoothly then it will increase the financial risks. After failing the empire owners cannot even survive, it may lead to suicide and depression. During the partnership, they must be aware with their roles and responsibilities. Sometimes, it is a common cause of dropping a family organization. For instance, the vehicle firm of "Hero-Honda" were running their business exponentially and delivered best affordable vehicle but five years before they were separated and now there are two ventures "Hero" and "Honda". Now, "Hero" venture dropped drastically and it is in the heavily loss making company.

In conclusion, I agree with the statement because family can support each other during bad days. While, choosing a wrong partner of family member makes organization tangible sometimes that destroy someone's life from their own family.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and takes a clear position that advantages outweigh disadvantages. The ideas are generally relevant, but some points are somewhat under-developed or lack clarity in their connection to the main thesis. For example, the mention of 'suicide and depression' as a consequence of business failure is overly dramatic and lacks proper contextual support. However, the writer does attempt to support their position with examples, such as Mukesh Ambani and Reliance. Overall, the task is addressed with a clear stance, placing the response at a Band 6.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing and progression are sometimes faulty; for instance, the transition between sentences within the body paragraphs can feel disjointed, as seen in the second paragraph where the jump from offering equity to Mukesh Ambani lacks smooth connective tissue. Paragraphing is used appropriately overall, but internal cohesion requires better management to reach a higher band. This corresponds to a Band 6.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer attempts less common vocabulary such as 'expansion', 'equity', and 'exponentially', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing throughout the text. Examples include 'work a group' instead of 'work as a group', 'own a same business' instead of 'own the same business', 'watching hours in the clock' instead of 'watching the clock', and 'heavily loss making company' instead of 'heavy loss-making company'. These errors demonstrate a limited control over less common lexical items, keeping the vocabulary score at a Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical errors are frequent. There are issues with articles ('prefer to their relatives' instead of 'prefer their relatives'), prepositions ('started their company in early ages' instead of 'at an early age'), and subject-verb agreement ('the vehicle firm of Hero-Honda were running' instead of 'was running'). Furthermore, punctuation and phrasing issues occasionally impede smooth reading. While the writer attempts complex structures, the frequent errors in basic and complex grammar place this performance firmly at a Band 5.5.
