Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear overall position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as trust among family members, division of labour like parents managing finances and children handling marketing, and secure career paths for future generations. However, these ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive points rather than deep exploration. The discussion of disadvantages touches upon nepotism and potential public conflicts between relatives, but lacks fully realized examples. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the criteria for Band 5.5 to 6.0, and is best placed at Band 5.5 due to the limited development of supporting arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays some overall organization with clear introductory and concluding paragraphs, and body paragraphs dedicated to pros and cons respectively. However, progression is frequently hindered by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions. Cohesive devices are often inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, such as the repetitive use of 'there' and 'to there relatives' for referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is disjointed due to grammatical disruptions and abrupt sentence connections. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to track ideas easily. These features align closely with a Band 5.0 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, reflecting a basic range that is only minimally adequate for the task. There are frequent word-choice errors, such as using 'diadvantages' instead of disadvantages, 'particurly' instead of particularly, and confusing 'takle' with take. Expressions like 'not worry about the monthly salry' and 'give there role' demonstrate a lack of precision and awkward collocation. While meaning is generally communicated despite the frequent spelling and lexical errors, the vocabulary falls short of the Band 6 threshold, making Band 5.0 a more accurate reflection of the student's current control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('family business are trust', 'advantage are greater'), incorrect preposition use, and severe spelling errors involving homophones ('there' instead of 'their' or 'they are', 'manage' instead of 'managed'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and misused periods fragmenting thoughts. Although some sentences are understandable, the high frequency of basic structural errors causes noticeable difficulty for the reader, placing this response firmly in the Band 5 category.
