Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the cotemporary era, most family members are engaged in their family business. Thus, it helps to get innovative ideas in business , fast decisions and flexible roles. However, it does present certain drawbacks, I firmly believe that its benefits far outweigh its negative aspects.

On the one hand, each member in family persue distinctive skills from each other. This is helpful for a family company because individual could provide new ideas to the business. For example, youngsters in family handle the technology better then elders, which could be helpful in marketing. Thus, this will increase the sales of a business leading to profit. Moreover, the family members will not ahve to waste their time by conducting long meetings to take imperative decisons realted to company. They could have a conversation with each other during a dinner which would help them to take the decision fast and easily. Apart from this, an individual will not have to apply for a sick leave. When one family member feels unwell, then his position can be easily replaced by other family member. Consequently, this would increase the productivity of a person as he gets enough time to recover and flexbility in business also makes the emotional bond stronger.

On the other hand, family has to bear loss for long period of time. When any unexpected circumstances arises the business might have to face loss. And if all the family members will be involved in one business, then they will not be having any other job to support their family during crisis. As a result, the whole family has to suffer loss unless they find any solution to deal with daunting situation. Furthermore, youngsters might not take their family business seriously. Most young ones take a drop out from their college and join their family business for fun and entertainment business. To cite an example, In Canada research shows that generation does not show sincerity to their family business. This leads to loss in a family business and will also spoil the carrer of an individual.

To conclude, although family business has certain drawbacks such as it would set the boundaries of earning and young ones would neglect the business. Despite these drawbacks, I believe that the advantages are considerably more significant.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, taking a clear position in the introduction that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as how younger family members handle technology better for marketing and how quick decisions can be made over dinner conversations. However, there is a tendency to slightly over-generalize in places, such as claiming that family members never need to apply for sick leave because others can seamlessly replace them. Overall, the task is well addressed with a clear development of ideas throughout the essay, fitting the Band 7 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organization and progression throughout. It is well-divided into paragraphs with a distinct introduction, two body paragraphs exploring opposing views, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure (e.g., 'Apart from this', 'Consequently'), placing it firmly in the Band 7 category where organization is clear despite minor flaws in cohesion management.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, utilizing phrases like 'innovative ideas', 'distinctive skills', and 'unexpected circumstances'. There are attempts to use less common lexical items with some awareness of style, but there are also noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'cotemporary' instead of 'contemporary', 'persue' instead of 'pursue', 'ahve' instead of 'have', and 'carrer' instead of 'career'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from achieving a higher band, making Band 6.0 an accurate reflection of the lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures like 'When any unexpected circumstances arises the business might have to face loss.' There are several grammatical errors present throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('circumstances arises'), missing articles ('in family business'), and awkward phrasing ('take a drop out from their college'). Punctuation also needs minor attention, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. Because the errors occur regularly but rarely impede overall communication, the performance aligns with Band 6.
