In many countries, it is like a traditional practice that all the members of the family join the same business. Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines both sides, and the body paragraphs elaborate on points such as shared responsibility and potential conflicts in career choices. For instance, the example of a family member being pressured into trade instead of medicine effectively illustrates the disadvantage regarding personal ambitions. Ideas are extended and supported well, though some points are slightly generalized. Overall, the task is fulfilled competently, aligning with the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the advantages, the disadvantages, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'The advantages of working together', 'On the other hannd', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the text. However, there are some mechanical errors and awkward transitions, as well as minor typographical issues like spacing before punctuation. Despite these minor flaws, the logical flow is maintained, making Band 6.5 an appropriate descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting less common items such as 'detrimental', 'mutual trust', and 'overwhelming'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'alread yestablished', 'New comers', 'donot', 'rsik', 'joinning', 'aimbitions', 'fiels', 'beneficail', and 'destry'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher band score. The lexical control sits firmly within the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like 'if one commits dishonesty or fraud with the others' and 'if one brother from a family is not interested...'. However, there are several grammatical and mechanical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('trust get broken'), missing articles, and widespread spacing and punctuation errors. These errors occur frequently enough to distract the reader, though they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6.0.
