Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this fast paced world, everyone wants to build their own business and become successful. At first they start with small start-ups and eventually they make partners and build the company. Most of the time, the family join with each other and build their business. They work together and earn well after few years of struggle. I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages if business is run by family members.

Firstly, building and running a bussiness is not an easy task. It takes years to build the company. Trust plays an important role in the business. According to reports, family members trust their own people rather than partners. The profit is equally shared amongst each other. Family members help each other in their personal life and during bad phase of business. Secondly, they can compromise for each other and teach them where are lagging behind without giving a second thought since they are family. Thirdly, there is no heirarchy withtin family, everyone is treated equally. This helps to have great bond within the family and in business as well. Future generation would take the business forward since they see the bond and attachment within the family and would like to continue the same and become successful.

On the other hand, there are few disadvantages as well, they are dependent on each other for business. There might be chances of clashes during family gathering and talk about business. Secondly, not all of the family members can attend the gathering since they need someone to run the business during festivals and gatherings. Family members would expect their next generations to take over the business but there might be chances that do not want to and study abroad.

I believe family member working together in their family business would develop a great sense of responsibility and help each other grow.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages. You take a clear position in the introduction, stating 'I believe there are more advantages than disadvantages if business is run by family members', and you maintain this stance throughout the essay. The body paragraphs present relevant ideas, such as trust, equal profit sharing, and mutual support as advantages, while acknowledging disadvantages such as dependency, conflicts during gatherings, and succession issues. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or briefly stated, such as the points regarding festivals and children studying abroad, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Overall, all parts of the task are addressed with a clear position and supporting ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices and sequencing markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Thirdly', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate advantages and disadvantages into distinct sections. However, referencing and logical progression are sometimes mechanical or abrupt, such as the transition into the fourth paragraph. Additionally, some cohesive links within sentences are slightly faulty, but overall the logical organisation is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You attempt some less common vocabulary such as 'fast paced world', 'compromise', 'attachment', and 'responsibility'. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'bussiness' instead of business, 'heirarchy' instead of hierarchy, and awkward phrasing like 'they can compromise for each other and teach them where are lagging behind'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the lexical score from rising higher due to occasional slips in collocation and form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the essay, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like phrasing appropriately. There are several control issues and grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('if business is run by family', 'during bad phase of business'), incorrect prepositions ('compromise for each other'), and subject-verb agreement or pronoun reference issues ('not all of the family members can attend... since they need someone'). Despite these frequent minor errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp your intended meaning without significant difficulty.
