Student answer (Band 6.0)

In these days, family owned enterprise is famous in the society as compare to going outside for the work. It is very common these days to expand a same business and pass from one generation to another. This essay will discuss the benefits and demerits of this trend in upcoming paragraphs.

On the one hand, the most significant advantage to follow this trend is shared financial benefits. Family members not only help each other in financial difficulties but also give an emotional support to fight back with problems. Another reason is family members are trustworthy and loyal toward each other. Therefore, every member of family work hard for success of business. Apart from this, It help to reduce stress and work load. Since everyone have shared responsibilities and they can ask for favour from one another.

On the other hand, family businesses also face some demirts. First of all, working in office together and staying at same home all the time can creat conflicts among family members. Sometimes, there is a situation where view points does not match and people argue under certain circumstances. This may lead stressfull environment and challenging work atmosphere. Additionally, it is also creat a lack of professionalism. To elaborate, Some people get jobs in the company due to their relationship status, even if they do not have valid degree or ability. As a result, it limits the opportunities of promotion for outsiders.

To be concluded, now days it is become trend to expand family businesses rather than working outside. From my perspective, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. This is because working with family member is less stressfull and boost energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and provides a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are generally relevant and supported, such as mentioning shared financial benefits, trustworthiness, conflicts, and lack of professionalism. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed and would benefit from deeper elaboration or more specific examples. For instance, the point regarding a lack of professionalism due to hiring unqualified family members is a strong argument, but it is not fully expanded. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, placing this response securely in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is organized into a four-paragraph structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each side, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To be concluded'. However, referencing and cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical, and paragraphing is sometimes affected by brief, underdeveloped sentences. For example, 'First of all, working in office...' introduces the disadvantages, but the logical flow between sentences occasionally stumbles due to grammatical inaccuracies. Paragraphing is used sufficiently, but overall progression could be smoother. This aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'family owned enterprise', 'shared financial benefits', and 'lack of professionalism'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as writing 'famous' instead of 'popular', 'demirts' instead of 'demerits', and 'stressfull environment' rather than 'stressful environment'. Spelling errors like 'creat' instead of 'create' also occur. While communication is not impeded, these inaccuracies and the limited flexibility in vocabulary keep the lexical score at a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, there is a high frequency of grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage (e.g., 'give an emotional support', 'everyone have shared responsibilities', 'It help', 'view points does not match'). Punctuation and word form errors are also present, such as 'now days it is become trend'. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they disrupt the flow and prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. The majority of sentences contain errors, which places this firmly at Band 5.5.
