Student answer (Band 6.5)

In these days, family owned enterprise is famous in the society as compared to going outside for the work. It is very common these days to expand a same business and passes from one generation to another. This essay will discuss the benefits and demerits of this trend in upcoming paragraphs.

On the one hand, the most significant advantage to follow this trend is shared financial benefits. Family members not only help each other in financial difficulties but also give an emotional suport to fight back with problems. Another reason is that family members are trustworthy and loyal toward each other. Therefore, every member of the family works hard for the success of business. Apart from this, It helps to reduce stress and workload. Since everyone has shared responsibilities and they can ask for favour from one another.

On the other hand, family businesses also face some demerits. First of all, working in the office together and staying at the same home all the time can create conflicts among family members. Sometimes, there is a situation where viewpoints do not match and people argue under certain circumstances. This may lead to a stressful environment and challenging work atmosphere. Additionally, it is also creates a lack of professionalism. To elaborate, some people get jobs in the company due to their relationship status, even if they do not have a valid degree or ability. As a result, it limits the opportunities of promotion for outsiders.

To be concluded, nowdays it has become a trend to expand family businesses rather than working outside. From my perspective, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. This is because working with family members is less stressful and boosts energy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and provides a clear overall position in the introduction and conclusion. The writer presents relevant ideas, such as shared financial support and emotional backing on the one hand, and potential conflicts and lack of professionalism on the other. However, some of these ideas are slightly under-developed and could be extended with more specific examples rather than general statements. For instance, the point regarding a lack of professionalism due to hiring based on relationship status is a strong argument, but it could be supported with a brief hypothetical or real-world scenario. Overall, the task is properly fulfilled, meeting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 standard for task response by maintaining a clear position and addressing both sides adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, dividing the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion appropriately. The writer uses standard cohesive devices to signal transitions, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To be concluded'. Progression is generally clear throughout the text. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'family members' without varied pronouns or synonyms. Additionally, some sentence-to-sentence links are a bit abrupt, and the transition phrases sometimes lack subtle integration. Despite these minor issues, the organisation is coherent enough to merit a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'enterprise', 'trustworthy', 'viewpoints', and 'professionalism'. There are, however, several word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'suport' (support), 'nowdays' (nowadays), and awkward collocations like 'relationship status' instead of familial ties or personal connections. Some phrases are also slightly unnatural, such as 'expand a same business'. The lexical range shows an attempt to use less common vocabulary, but occasional slips in spelling and precision restrict the score to a 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures appropriately in sentences like 'Sometimes, there is a situation where viewpoints do not match and people argue under certain circumstances.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses present throughout the text, including fragment sentences like 'Since everyone has shared responsibilities and they can ask for favour from one another' and unnecessary comma splices or capitalized errors like 'Apart from this, It helps...'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without severe confusion. This fits the criteria for Band 6.0.
