Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is common in many parts of the world that family members work alongside one another in family-owned business. I believe that family business have more advantages than disadvantages because the family members often have a high level of trust and commitment, although disagreements can sometimes create problems.

One of the major advantages of working in the family business is they often have strong level of trust and can communicate more easily. This is because of everyone in family business would know each other very well also they would know their strenghts and weaknesses. Futhermore, the communiction could be faster because they already understand each other's personalities. For example, a family-owned restaurant, parents and their children may divide their responsibilities between cooking, serving and managing finances. As a result, the business grows quickly and create cooperative environment and help business to run efficiently.

Another advantage of family business is family members are highly committed to the sucess of the business because they see it as somethig that belongs to the whole family. If the business succeeds whole family can benifit financially aslo future generation can inheritant it. For example, a family owns a local grocery shop may work longer hours during busy periods to earn more because the income of the entier family is relying on that business. Therefore, family members are willing to work more hard and make a long-term decision rather than focusing on short-term profits.

However, there are some disadvantages of working with the family members in the family business because sometimes the family relationships can create conflict at work. To which it is said that because some family members might want to save money whereas some family members want to expand their current bussiness due to that family arguments might enter the workplace. For example, two sibilngs owns a eatery might disagree about whether to expand it or save money for an emergency, this dissaggrement could affect their personal relationship as well as the business. Therefore, whenever there is a conflict of interest it have always affected a business negatively.

In conclusion, although family business can sometimes lead to disagreements between relatives, I believe that they have more advantages than disadvantages Strong communication, trust and great committment make business grow faster.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as a family-owned restaurant and a grocery shop. The writer explores both the benefits, like trust, commitment, and fast communication, and the drawbacks, such as personal conflicts entering the workplace. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, and some explanations could be more deeply developed to reach the highest bands. Overall, the task is well handled and meets the criteria for Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response features a clear overall progression and logical organisation throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, moving from the introduction to distinct body paragraphs covering advantages and disadvantages, followed by a summary conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'However' are used to connect ideas, though there are minor mechanical errors in referencing and cohesion, such as 'To which it is said that' in the final body paragraph. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, placing the writing comfortably within Band 6.5 or 7.0; however, minor awkwardness in transitional phrasing keeps it at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'cooperative environment', 'conflict of interest', and 'long-term decision'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, including 'strenghts', 'communiction', 'sucess', 'somethig', 'benifit', 'inheritant', 'entier', 'sibilngs', and 'eatery'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision and control that prevents the score from reaching Band 7.0. The lexical resource aligns best with Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'It is common in many parts of the world that family members work alongside one another in family-owned business' (missing article/pluralisation) and 'whenever there is a conflict of interest it have always affected a business negatively' (tense agreement). Punctuation and grammatical slips occur regularly throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall comprehension. This performance fits the Band 6.0 descriptors.
