IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Write about the following topic:
In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Many people believe joining a family business can limit their growth. These people think that they will have to do the same task everyday to run their business which can limit their creativity. I believe that when a family member joins their own business it can be more advantageous. These family business owners have full creative freedom through which they can scale their business.
A family members who joins a genrational business need not worry about earning a daily livelihood. They are already financially secure and are not under debt or student loans. One such example in my country is the Ambani Family. Their company Relience is a third generation business which deals in oil and natural resources. When their youngest son Mukesh joined the business, Relience could pivot from oil to mobile phone manufacturing. When a family member joins their own business it is not only advantageous for the member but also for the business. Another advantage of joining a family business is there is no coorporate ladder. There is a direct knowledge transfer from the founder to the new member. Many vineyard owners in Italy wait for the children to grown up to join their business. A business could save hours when a new member is added.
When a business hires an employee who is not part of their family, building trust in the employee takes time. So I believe when family members work together in their own business they work on a common goal of scaling the business, thus giving a better growth to the business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear position that advantages outweigh disadvantages. The introduction acknowledges a counter-argument regarding limited creativity, though this point is somewhat underexplored. The body paragraphs present relevant ideas, such as financial security and the elimination of the corporate ladder, supported by examples such as the Ambani family and Italian vineyards. While the examples add relevance, some generalisations are present, and the ideas could be extended further for a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used, though the second body paragraph is quite dense and could be broken down for better visual and logical separation. Cohesive devices are used, but they are sometimes mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'When a family member joins...' and 'Another advantage...'. Referencing is generally clear, though referencing phrases like 'One such example' link effectively to the preceding point. Overall, cohesion is managed adequately to meet the Band 6.0 criteria.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'financial security', 'creative freedom', 'pivot', and 'knowledge transfer'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'everyday' instead of 'every day', 'genrational' instead of 'generational', 'Relience' instead of 'Reliance', 'coorporate' instead of 'corporate', and 'grown up' instead of 'grow up'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 6.0, as they highlight limitations in accuracy when attempting less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures ('When a business hires...') and relative clauses. There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('A family members who joins', 'is no coorporate ladder'), subject-verb agreement issues ('A family members... need not'), and missing commas in complex sentences. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear and they rarely impede communication, placing the grammatical performance firmly at Band 6.0.
