Student answer (Band 6.5)

In amny countries, it is common for family members to work together in a family-owned business. although this trends can sometimes create disagreements, I believe that family business have more advantages than disadvantages because of strong trust, better communication and long term commitment among relatives.

Out of all the arguments, one of the major advanatages of family business is that high level of trust between members. Since family members know each other well, they are more likely to comminicate openly and support one another during challenging situations. Moreover, they usully have a strong sense of responsibility towards the success of the business. For instance, parents may teach their children how to manage customers, employees and finances, allowing valuable knowledge and experience to be passed from one generation to another. In addition, family members may be willing to work long hours when the business faces financial difficulties.

On the other hand, working with relatives can also have some disadvantages. The main problem is that personal relationships may affect business decisions. For example, a manager might promote a family members who is less qualifies than other employee simple because of relation. Furthermore, sometimes disagreements about money, vital decisions and wroking hours can create tension within family. Besides that, some family members may find it difficult to separate their professional responsibilities from their family members.

In conclusion, although family businesses can lead to conflicts and unfair decisions, I believe that their advantages outweigh the disadvantages because of strong trust, shared responsibities and transfer knowledge between generations can help family business remain successful for many years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and presents a clear position throughout the essay. The overall stance is stated in the introduction and reiterated in the conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as parents teaching children management skills and potential issues regarding unfair promotions or family tension. While some ideas could be slightly more deeply developed to push into higher bands, the response successfully satisfies the core requirements of the prompt with a clear and logical progression of arguments. This corresponds well to a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, beginning with a clear introduction, moving through well-structured body paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and ending with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'For instance', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although referencing is occasionally a bit repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the overall readability of the essay. The structure is well managed, fitting the criteria for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, such as 'long term commitment', 'financial difficulties', and 'professional responsibilities'. However, there are a number of spelling and word-choice errors scattered throughout the text, including 'amny' instead of many, 'trends' instead of trend, 'advanatages', 'comminicate', 'usully', 'qualifies' instead of qualified, and 'transfer knowledge' instead of transferred knowledge or knowledge transfer. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, their frequency prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well. There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors present, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('family business have' instead of businesses have, 'family members may be' used alongside singular/plural slips), missing articles ('transfer knowledge between generations'), and minor typos like 'wroking' hours. Despite these recurring inaccuracies, the errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
