Write about the following topic:
In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many nations, household members work jointly in their family business. Although this trend has some disadvantages like poor professtional work environment, I believe that the advantages of this development outweight the disadvantages due to better control on work and lesser labour requirment.
To begin with major benefit of this trend is a greater control on business operations. When more than one member of family involves in family firm, automatically increases the efficiency of work and divides the pressure of workload equally into all the fmaily workers. As a result business will run smoothly without obstacls and productivity will increase. Another benefits is less labour cost. More the family members will work less the worker need to hire, eventually labour cost will go down. For example, a small grocery store can be operate by two or three family members without hiring formar workers.
The most serious disadvantage working in family business is that, it mitigates the professtional work environment. In other words, family members do not follow the rules which are essential for business. Furthermore, they are not punctual and sometimes they may take off from work whenever they feel. This kind of behaviour could impact the business in negative way. For instance, a father who owns a shop may never treat his son as he treats other workers and this can cause problem among workers. However, these negatives are not as significant as associated benefits.
In conclusion, despite the disadvantages of working in family owned company, the advantages have a greater impact. For this reason, I believe advantages of this trend outweight the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both advantages and disadvantages of family businesses and presents a clear position throughout. The introduction outlines the writer's stance that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, which is maintained in the conclusion. The main body paragraphs provide relevant ideas, such as better operational control and lower labour costs, alongside disadvantages like a reduced professional work environment. However, some of these ideas are slightly under-developed or rely on generalisations rather than deep extension. For instance, the example of a grocery store is somewhat simplistic. Nevertheless, the core requirements of Task Achievement are met solidly, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptors where all parts are addressed and relevant ideas are presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a clear overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct theme. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'To begin with', 'Another benefits', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are instances of faulty referencing and mechanical transitional phrases, such as 'More the family members will work less the worker need to hire', which disrupts the natural flow of discourse. Additionally, some minor errors in cohesion prevent the text from reaching a higher band. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'productivity', 'operations', and 'mitigates'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors throughout the response, including 'professtional', 'outweight', 'requirment', 'obstacls', and 'formar'. Word choice and collocation are also occasionally imprecise, such as 'mitigates the professtional work environment' instead of 'compromises' or 'undermines'. Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, which places the response firmly within the Band 6 descriptor for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Although this trend has some disadvantages...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'When more than one member of family involves in family firm', 'divides the pressure of workload equally into all the fmaily workers', and 'More the family members will work less the worker need to hire'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally re-read, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the characteristics of a Band 6 performance.
