Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, taking a clear position that the advantages outweigh the drawbacks. Ideas are presented regarding responsibility, ownership, growth, and potential interpersonal conflicts. However, the development of these ideas remains somewhat superficial. For instance, the point about responsibility in the second paragraph is generalized without concrete examples. Similarly, the disadvantages in the fourth paragraph are stated briefly without sufficient expansion. According to the band descriptors, this reflects a Band 6 level, where all parts of the task are addressed, but some ideas are under-developed or lack full elaboration.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays an overall logical arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized to separate advantages from disadvantages. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, as seen with phrases like 'Secondly, pass the business to the next generation is a ideal way' (which also has grammatical issues) and 'In conclusion, wwhile family business has certains drawbacks like, break our relationships'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and transitional flow is disrupted by punctuation errors and awkward phrasing. This matches the Band 6 descriptor where cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and paragraphing, while present, lacks seamless progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting words and phrases such as 'advantageous', 'analytical skills', 'international level', and 'misunderstandings'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'In many portions of the World', 'holding family run business', 'take car of it', and 'pass the business to the next generation is a ideal way'. Spelling errors like 'wwhile' and 'certains' also occur. These errors do not seriously impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6 for lexical resource.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or relative-style clauses ('you are the one who can take car of it'). However, there is a high frequency of grammatical errors, including missing prepositions ('in term of'), incorrect verb forms ('has need to work'), punctuation issues (missing spaces after commas and periods), and subject-verb agreement slips. While communication is generally maintained, the frequent errors in basic and complex structures prevent the response from achieving a higher band, aligning well with the Band 5 descriptors where frequent errors occur and control is inconsistent.
