Student answer (Band 6.0)

Family is a backbone for every individuals. WIthout family support, people can not achieve anything in life. Across the globe, in many countries , family members work toghether in their family business. In my view, family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages.

In this paragraph, I will discuss merits of the family businesses. To begin with, family members work together which means they don't need to hire somebody from the outside. So, money stays in the family. Also, members of the family work hard to solve the issue if arise or stay till late evenings to complete the work. For example, Reliance digital is one of the world's top 10 companies in oil production which is run by Mr Mukesh Ambani who is the richest businessman in the world. He can not make this happen without his family. He is having 3 children and all of them are in family business.

Furthermore, offsprings can learn basic business skills in the childhood. As they grew up, they can join the business without wasting much time. Apart from this, if a child is clever enough he/she can grow the business or start a new business. Also, family business keeps the family together and all members share strong bond too.

However, there are quite a few demerits of working in the family business. First, All members can not go on a holiday together because there is always need of some people to run the business. Second, sometimes disputes in family ruin the whole business.

Overall, family business has more pros than cons. So, family members should work together in their family business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position that family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as financial savings and early skill acquisition for younger generations, along with disadvantages like holiday constraints and family disputes. However, some ideas remain under-developed or briefly stated, reflecting a standard characteristic of this level. For instance, the point about offspring learning basic skills is not fully extended with specific details or broader impacts. The example provided regarding Reliance Digital is somewhat misplaced, as the company is a massive multinational corporation rather than a traditional family business managed collaboratively on a daily household scale. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to provide more fully developed explanations and more accurate, directly relevant examples to support the main arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion. The text is divided into paragraphs, each dedicated to a specific theme, such as merits, disadvantages, and the final verdict. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, as seen in the frequent use of transitional markers like 'To begin with', 'Also', and 'Furthermore'. Additionally, the announcement 'In this paragraph, I will discuss merits of the family businesses' detracts from natural academic flow. While information is logically sequenced, progression could be smoother. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without relying on formulaic signposts, ensuring that transitions between sentences and paragraphs feel entirely natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'demerits', 'disputes', and 'offsprings'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'toghether', 'offsprings' (used as a plural countable noun), and phrasing like 'issues if arise' or 'there is always need'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in lexical control. To improve, the writer should focus on precise word formation, correct spelling, and natural collocations, moving beyond basic vocabulary choices to use less common lexical items with greater accuracy and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with articles, subject-verb agreement, and pluralisation, such as 'Family is a backbone', 'every individuals', 'people can not achieve', and 'all members can not go'. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear and they rarely impede communication. The control over punctuation and basic structures is satisfactory, though attempts at complex structures occasionally introduce flaws. To progress further, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free sentences, improve article usage, and ensure stricter agreement between subjects and verbs across more varied sentence structures.
