Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is irrefutable that running a family business is in trend. In many nations, most of family members beleive to work together in their family business. Although, this practice has some demerits but it also comes with number of merits. In this upcoming paragraphs, I will discuss both benefits and drawbacks with examples.

On the one hand, the most significant factor is the long term commitment. To explain it, relatives are oftem dedicated in order to maintain their business for future generation, that is why they do hard work to reach their work at top. For example, if a family owns a restaurent then their children get involve in this rather then selling it, which demonstrate their commitment and willingness to preserve their legacy. Moreover, hiring any unknown person can break trust and loyality therefore it is appropriate to have all staff from own family. As a result, it helps to have stronger relationship and trustworthy business.

On the other hand, recruting staff from family can create chances of confliction. To illustrate it, family members have their own opinions so sometime due to disagreement, they can bring their personal emotions into workplace. Consequently, it can create unhelathy business which can trun in downfall period of the business. For instance, two brothers run a business may disagree on how to invest the profits. If they both can not reach on mutual decision this can deteriorate to their personal relationship and affect their work negatively.

In conclusion, no doubt family bsuiness has some unfavourable effects but their positive impacts outweigh to it and responsible to lead a sucessful business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of family businesses, presenting a clear overall position. The ideas are generally relevant, fulfilling the criteria for this band level, though some aspects are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the advantage regarding long-term commitment is introduced and supported with an example about a restaurant and children preserving a legacy, but the explanation remains somewhat generalized. Similarly, the disadvantage of potential conflicts is highlighted with an example of two brothers disagreeing over investments, which clearly supports the prompt. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to fully develop all ideas with deeper explanations and more comprehensive real-world examples that showcase a fully extended line of argument throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, with clear signaling phrases such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in its transitional phrasing. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional minor lapses in logical progression prevent the progression from feeling entirely smooth. For instance, the link between hiring unknown people breaking trust and having all staff from one's own family feels somewhat abrupt. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices without relying on formulaic transitions, ensuring that the flow of ideas from sentence to sentence is completely seamless and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating sufficient range to discuss family businesses. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'irrefutable', 'commitment', and 'deteriorate', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and word forms. Examples of errors include 'beleive' for believe, 'restaurent' for restaurant, 'get involve' instead of get involved, 'confliction' instead of conflict, 'unhelathy' instead of unhealthy, 'trun' instead of turn, 'bsuiness' instead of business, and 'sucessful' instead of successful. Furthermore, collocations like 'reach on mutual decision' rather than reach a mutual decision show limitations in precision. These spelling and word-choice errors do not completely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the main points, but they prevent the writing from attaining a higher lexical band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied grammatical structures. However, there are a number of grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. Examples include 'most of family members beleive to work' instead of believe in working, 'in this upcoming paragraphs' instead of these upcoming paragraphs, 'relatives are oftem dedicated in order to maintain' where prepositions and forms are slightly mismanaged, and 'impacts outweigh to it' where an unnecessary preposition is added. Punctuation errors, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and in compound structures (e.g., 'For instance, two brothers'), are also present. These errors represent a mix of structures where grammar mistakes occur, but they rarely impede overall communication, fitting the characteristics of this band level well.
