In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Family businesses have a great contribution to the economy for many countries, especially when family members work together to build their family businesses. Although family businesses create generational wealth and provide self-employment for their members, many individuals would want to build something of their own and to avoid any future conflicts when it comes to financial matters, as we shall discuss.
On one hand, families working together to build something concrete for themselves not only create a livelihood, but also solidify their interpersonal relationship. Moreover, the legacy stays in the family, motivating future generations to carry it forward. For instance , according the forbes article, the next generation of millionares would most likely come from well- established business tycons heirs . Also, a great motivating factor for upcoming generations to work on a solid ground and strenthgen ties with their own people.
On the other hand, there is a definite possibility of personal conflicts amongst siblings, and sometimes stringent action against a family person can be really difficult . Moreover, it can have a drastic impact on business, which sometimes results in bad blood between blood relatives. For example, taking a strict action against a regular employee would not hamper company's reputation, but if the situation involves a loved one it can certainly leave a scar on the relationship and could affect future partnerships.
To conclude, In my opinion family owned businesses which involves members of the family working together has more merits of building a deeply commited community and carrying a legacy than the demerits of families working closely together.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by considering both the merits and demerits of family businesses, presenting a clear position by the conclusion. Your introduction outlines both sides, and body paragraphs explore themes of generational wealth, relationship building, potential interpersonal conflict, and business impact. However, the development of ideas fluctuates. While the benefits and drawbacks are introduced with relevant thoughts, some points remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended. For instance, the reference to a Forbes article in the second paragraph lacks specific detail or elaboration to strongly anchor your argument. To reach the next level of achievement, ideas would need to be more consistently and deeply explored with well-integrated, specific examples that seamlessly support your overall stance throughout every paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments, such as the advantages in the second paragraph and the disadvantages in the third. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, using transition markers like 'On one hand,' 'Moreover,' and 'To conclude.' However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical or faulty, and referencing can occasionally lack absolute clarity. For example, the transitional phrase 'Also, a great motivating factor...' in the second paragraph is somewhat fragmented and lacks a clear subject verb structure linked smoothly to the preceding sentence. To achieve a higher band, the transitions between sentences and ideas must flow more naturally without relying on formulaic patterns.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'generational wealth', 'interpersonal relationship', and 'stringent action'. There are, however, some word choice, spelling, and word-form errors that do not impede communication. For example, you misspelled 'millionares' instead of 'millionaires', 'tycons' instead of 'tycoons', and 'strenthgen' instead of 'strengthen'. Additionally, phrases like 'a family person' are less precise than 'a family member'. To move towards a higher lexical band, you would need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, minimizing spelling slips and employing less common items with finer control over style and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response makes use of a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as in your opening sentence. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. For example, there is unnecessary spacing before punctuation marks ('For instance , according the forbes article'), a missing article ('according to the Forbes article'), and a slight grammatical awkwardness in the conclusion where 'family owned businesses which involves' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('businesses... involves' instead of 'businesses... involve'). Furthermore, capitalisation and comma splices occasionally disrupt the flow. To improve, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over punctuation and subject-verb agreement.
