Student answer (Band 7.0)

In many countries, it is common for family members to work together in a family business. While this type of business has some disadvantages, I believe that the advantages are greater because family members usually have strong trust, commitment and shared interest in the success of the business.

One major advantage of family business is trust, Family members generally know each other well and can communicate openly. They may also be more willing to support one another during difficult periods. Foe example, if the business experiences financial problems, family mebers may accept lower salaries or work extra hours to help the business survive. In addition, family members often have a strong emotional connectionto the business, so they are likely to be highly committed to its long-term success.

Another benefits is that decision- making can be faster. In a family business, there may be fewer formal procedures and less bureaucracy. Family members can discuss an issue directly and make a decision quickly. Moreover, younger family members can learn valuable skills from older generations. This can help the business continue successfully from one generation to another.

However, family business can also have disadvantages. personal disagreements may affect professional decisions, and it can sometimes be difficult to separate family relationships from work respnsibilities. For instance, a disagreement between two famly members about how to manage the business could create tension at home as well as at work. There may also be concerns about giving important positions to family members based on relationships rather than qualifications.

In conclusion, although family business can create conflicts and make professional decision more complicated, I believe they have more advantages than disadvantages. Strong trust, commitment, quick decision- making and the opportunity to pass knowledge between generations can contribute significantly to the success of a family business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both advantages and disadvantages, culminating in a clear position that the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Ideas are generally well extended and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as family members accepting lower salaries during financial trouble. The progression of ideas reflects a solid understanding of the topic, meeting the criteria for a strong performance. To reach the highest bands, some of the supporting points could be elaborated with even greater depth, and the arguments against family businesses could be integrated more comprehensively to ensure a fully balanced discussion throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the introduction to specific advantages, disadvantages, and a well-synthesised conclusion. The writer uses cohesive devices effectively to connect ideas, such as 'One major advantage', 'In addition', 'Another benefits', and 'However'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to structure the argument. While the overall flow is coherent, occasional minor slip-ups in cohesion and referencing, alongside slight mechanical phrasing, prevent it from achieving a higher tier of seamless progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'bureaucracy', 'long-term success', and 'professional decisions'. The tone is appropriate for an IELTS essay. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'Foe example', 'mebers', 'connectionto', 'Another benefits', 'respnsibilities', and 'famly', which indicate limitations in precision and spelling control. To improve further, the writer should focus on expanding word choice flexibility, refining collocations, and eliminating minor typographical errors that occasionally distract the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well, such as 'if the business experiences financial problems, family mebers may accept lower salaries'. There are several error-free sentences, demonstrating decent control over basic grammar and punctuation. Nevertheless, a number of recurring grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text, including comma splices and spacing issues like 'business, and', 'business is trust, Family', and missing articles or pluralisation inconsistencies. Strengthening sentence variety and polishing punctuation accuracy will help elevate this criterion to the next level.
