Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response only partially addresses the prompt and fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at a mere 68 words. While the writer attempts to introduce a position regarding whether family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages, the ideas remain severely under-developed and limited. The introduction touches upon the topic, but the body paragraph quickly shifts into personal anecdotes ('Like our family start their business') rather than providing a balanced discussion or well-supported arguments. To improve, the writer must ensure the essay reaches the required length and fully explores both advantages and disadvantages with clear, extended explanations and relevant examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text demonstrates some basic organization, but information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. The response features a brief introductory section followed by an incomplete body paragraph, resulting in a lack of clear overall progression. Paragraphing is not used effectively, and the transition between sentences is abrupt. While cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'Beginning with rationalization', they are awkward and mechanical. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to logically sequence ideas, use paragraphing appropriately, and employ cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader smoothly through a well-structured argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which strains the reader's understanding at times. The writer attempts some less common phrasing, such as 'inevitable truth', 'controversial talk of contemporary era', and 'multifarious points', but these show noticeable inaccuracies in collocation and style. For instance, 'controversial talk' is unnatural, and phrases like 'vehemently assent' do not align with standard English usage. There are also issues with word form and word choice throughout the short response. To progress, the writer should focus on expanding their lexical range and practicing natural collocations and word forms appropriate for academic or general training tasks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are notable issues with verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'working family business' instead of 'working in a family business', and 'Our family start their business' where plural agreement is mismanaged. Complex sentence structures are absent or poorly attempted. To improve, the writer needs to work on foundational grammar rules, including articles, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, and verb forms, while gradually incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures with better accuracy.
