Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many parts of the world, relatives work together in businesses that are owned and operated by families. However, agreements sometimes lead to disagreements. I believe that family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages because family members tend to have trust and commitment, which will be discussed in the upcoming paragraphs.

One major advantage of family business is having trust on each other; because of that, they will communicate easily and mitigate their problems. Along with that, sometimes if they need to work longer hours they can they do not need to hire another employee, which leads to lower employment costs and increases their profit. For instance, a family opens a restaurant and their children handle the financial costs in that they don't have trust issues, and during busy hours they will work more. As a result, they will support each other through ups and downs.

On the other hand, disadvantages cannot be hidden when working in family businesses. The main problem is that personal disagreements will affect professional decisions. if they have separate personal hindrances between their relationships which create tension or stress in the worplace as well as it will create toxic work environment too. For example, two brothers who diagree about how to expand business may continue agruement at home and at work. In addition, sometimes relatives want references for the particular position for which they are not qualified.

In conclusion, although family businesses have merits but conflicts and misunderstanding will become problems, but according to me, advantages outweigh their disadvantages. Relationship strength and trust these things will help them to be successful

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including trust, commitment, lower staffing costs, personal conflict, and unqualified relatives. The restaurant and two-brother examples help make the discussion concrete. Some ideas, however, are less fully developed than others: the claim that family members communicate easily is asserted rather than explained, and the point about relatives receiving roles for which they are unqualified is introduced without showing its consequences. To strengthen the response, explain how each point affects the business and connect the examples more explicitly to your overall judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the direction of the argument easy to follow. There is also a logical progression from trust and cost savings to the risks of personal conflict. However, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Along with that” introduces a new advantage without a precise connection, while “because of that” has an unclear reference. The final paragraph repeats the contrast with “although” and “but,” which weakens the closing. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and make each paragraph’s internal progression more deliberate.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “commitment,” “employment costs,” “professional decisions,” and “toxic work environment.” These choices show an attempt to discuss both business and relationship issues. However, the range and control are uneven, with several inaccurate or unnatural expressions that sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “having trust on each other,” “personal hindrances between their relationships,” and “references for the particular position.” Spelling errors such as “worplace,” “diagree,” and “agruement” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; precise phrases such as “trust each other,” “personal conflicts,” and “recommendations for a position” would communicate your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause in the introduction and a conditional example beginning “if they have…”. This gives the response some structural variety, and the main argument is generally understandable. However, several sentences contain grammatical errors or awkward construction. In “sometimes if they need to work longer hours they can they do not need to hire,” the clause structure breaks down; “if they have separate personal hindrances… which create tension” also lacks a clear, complete structure. There are errors in sentence boundaries and punctuation, including the lowercase “if” after a full stop and the comma splice in the conclusion. Practise building complete clauses and proofreading punctuation, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
