Student answer (Band 6.5)

Undoubtedly, to earn a livelihood, some people prefer to do a job while, other runs businesses. Similarly, in most parts of the world individuals still prefer to work in their own family business rather doing something else. I opine that working within a family business has more merits as compared to its demerits. This essay will explain how advantages far outweigh disadvantages.

To begin with, working with family helps an individual to build confidence at an early age. The owner or head of the business motivates their young ones to go to the office and see how things actually work. As a result, children develop confidence and interest in doing business, which further prevents them from being exploited in the job market. For example, freshers are bullied by their employers to work at minimum salary irrespective of the fact how brilliant they are. Furthermore, there is no fear that someone will break confidentiality when they leave the organization, because no one wants their family to face any loss or criminal case.

In addition, no one is perfect, so each family member has their own speciality. Moreover, when all the traits and skills come together, then the business will prosper and flourish without any doubt. For example, in a small cloth shop, the father takes care of the accounts, and their children might be perfect in marketing. So, in this way, the traits of all the members of the family are utilized properly. On the other hand, in the severe case if separation will happen, then the outgoing family member is not given the proper respect that used to be given.

In conclusion, it is more fruitful to work in the family business because it not only teaches a member to be confident but also protect them from getting exploited by the outside environment. Moreover, there is no fear that some will leak the business secrets, and also by working together in unity entity will reach the heights of success.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe family businesses have more advantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons, including early exposure to business, trust around confidential information, and combining family members’ skills; the cloth-shop example helps illustrate the last point. This covers the task, but the support is uneven. The claim that family work prevents young people from being exploited in employment is not fully explained, and the disadvantage of separation is introduced briefly without showing how significant it is compared with the benefits. To strengthen the response, develop this counterpoint and explain more precisely why the advantages outweigh it, using specific examples or consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Ideas generally progress from confidence and trust to the contribution of different skills, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore” and “In addition” help readers follow the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical or unclear. “On the other hand” introduces the separation disadvantage, but its relationship to the preceding example and to your overall position is not explained. The conclusion also strings together several benefits rather than synthesising the argument. Use linking phrases to show the precise relationship between ideas, and make references such as “their children” and “some will leak” clearer by naming who or what they refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “confidentiality,” “exploited,” “speciality,” and “prosper and flourish.” These choices allow you to discuss trust, skills and business outcomes, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some less common expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “other runs businesses,” “their own speciality,” and “in the severe case if separation will happen.” There is also repetition of broad terms such as “business” and “traits,” which limits precision. Aim for natural collocations and more exact wording—for example, describe family members as having different areas of expertise, and refer to a business’s commercial secrets rather than “business secrets.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “which” and “when,” and the main ideas remain understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “Moreover, when all the traits and skills come together, then the business will prosper and flourish.” However, some grammatical errors remain in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “other runs businesses” should use a plural subject and verb, while “working in the family business … not only teaches … but also protect” needs parallel verb agreement. The phrase “if separation will happen” also has an incorrect conditional structure. Review subject–verb agreement and conditional forms, and proofread longer sentences for consistent structure and punctuation.
