In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many nations, family members work jointly in their family business. The benefit of this trend is that it can help them better manage business operations, and the drawback is that it can lead to conflicts among family members. I think cons are more than prons.

One of the merits of the trend is that it can overcome distress of managing a business. As running a business comes up with a lot of responsibilities, so family members can share duties, and they can also help each other in various tasks. This would not only make tasks less tiring but also create mutual understanding. For instance, one member can take care of purchasing materials, and other member can help in marketing or selling. However, I believe this trend has more drawbacks than benefits because work of one person depends on other person.

Conflicts can arise between family members by working together. Because everyone has different viewpoints, there are chances that they might not agree with each other, which creates a rift in relationships. Due to this, a business can suffer since there are the chances of constant verbal abuse between family members. For instance, one brother wants to take a risk in business by buying material in bulk, while other brother wants stability, so different opinions can create conflicts. I believe this trend has more disadvantages than advantages.

To conclude, although family members can manage their business better by working together, severe conflicts can arise between family members because everyone shares different ideas and opinions. I feel joint family firms has more demerits than merits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction—“cons are more than prons”—and remains consistent in the body and conclusion. You address both sides by explaining that relatives can share duties and that differing opinions may cause conflict; the examples about purchasing and marketing, and the brothers’ contrasting business decisions, are relevant. This covers the task well, and the conflict argument is more fully explained. However, the benefit is less developed: the claim that one person’s work depends on another is introduced but not explained, and the response could clarify when shared responsibilities improve a business. More specific development of both sides would make the discussion more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion that restates your view. Signposting such as “One of the merits,” “However,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the argument. The examples are placed alongside the relevant points, supporting progression. At times, though, connections feel mechanical or the reference is unclear. For example, “work of one person depends on other person” does not clearly explain how this supports the disadvantages, and “Due to this” could refer more precisely to disagreement or the resulting rift. Use linking phrases selectively and make the relationship between each claim and its explanation explicit to strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “manage business operations,” “share duties,” “mutual understanding,” and “conflicts.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “a rift in relationships” and “constant verbal abuse,” although the latter is stronger than the example seems to justify. Several noticeable word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “overcome distress of managing a business,” “comes up with a lot of responsibilities,” and “work jointly in their family business” are not natural formulations. “Cons” and “prons” is also informal and contains a spelling error. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and a consistent formal register rather than choosing more elaborate wording that does not fit the meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional example (“one brother wants… while other brother wants…”) and a concession in the conclusion. Most sentences remain understandable, and errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some grammatical problems persist, however. In “As running a business comes up with a lot of responsibilities, so…,” the opening clause and “so” create a faulty construction; use one connector. Articles and possessives are also inconsistent in “other member,” “other person,” and “other brother,” while “joint family firms has” has a subject–verb agreement error. Review article use, plural agreement, and sentence construction, then proofread for these recurring patterns.
