In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, the issues of the impact of family business has garnered significant attention. many individuals agree whether it has postive effect or negative impact on business. While there are negative sides to family business I believe that the postitive effect of doing business with family members outweigh the drawbacks due to the trust built over the years and comitments within family members.

Firstly, one of the major advantage of family business is trust. families know one anothers weakness and strength which makes it more easier to trust themseleves. For example, family members who are currently not in the country can confidently trust their multi-million worth of business to their younger brother or sister due to the level of trust they have for them. Thus, resulting in more progress and profit with less fear of the unkonwn.

Secondly, commitment is one key every business should aim to have and working with a group with the same interest as families do, is one way of achieving a greater goal. For instance, in an organisation where both family members and non family members are employed. the major interest of the non family worker will be to get paid while the interest of the family memeber will be sowly for the growth of the organisation.

In conclusion, the advantage of family business outweighes the drawback, due to trust, same interest and greater commitment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the benefits of family businesses outweigh the drawbacks, and you give two relevant reasons—trust and commitment. The examples about entrusting a business to a sibling and comparing family and non-family employees help explain your view. However, the discussion of disadvantages is only briefly acknowledged, and the claim that non-family workers mainly want pay while relatives focus on growth is broad and needs qualification or evidence. The response also does not meet the stated 250-word minimum, which limits the opportunity to develop both sides and support your examples. To strengthen the response, explain a realistic disadvantage, such as family disagreements affecting decisions, and develop how the advantages outweigh it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates the view. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “In conclusion” make the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the stronger control associated with more flexible cohesion. However, the linking can feel mechanical, and “Thus, resulting in more progress and profit” is not smoothly connected as a complete sentence. The comparison in the second body paragraph would also benefit from clearer links between the claim, example, and conclusion. Use a wider range of transitions and pronouns that clearly refer back to the ideas being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “trust,” “commitment,” “drawbacks,” “organisation,” and “growth,” and the reader can understand your main points. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “outweigh the drawbacks.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate, including “the impact of family business has garnered” and “same interest.” Spelling errors such as “postitive,” “comitments,” “unkonwn,” and “memeber” are noticeable and reduce the accuracy of the vocabulary. Aim to use precise business-related expressions and check spelling carefully; for example, describe shared goals as “common objectives” and refer to “the long-term success of the business.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concession in “While there are negative sides … I believe…” and a relative clause in “family members who are currently not in the country.” These structures help communicate your argument, and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. For example, “one of the major advantage” needs a plural noun, while “families know one another’s weakness and strength” needs plural forms. The opening sentence also has a mismatch between “the issues” and “has garnered,” and the fragment “Thus, resulting in…” is not a complete sentence. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries, while continuing to practise complex structures.
