Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is undoubtedly true that, being a business owner is always better than working on a 9 to 5 job. Nowadays, in various parts of the world, people prefer to join their own family business which is highly beneficial for them. In this essay, I will discuss both merits and demerits of this trend along with all possible reasons.

To begin with, my first significant reason is that thanks to stronger roots of family business there are fewer chances of failure. Which will provide the family members with stable and reliable source of income. For instance, M.D.H Masala brand in India was established by late Mohan Chandra Thakur, who was a farmer. Now his son Mr. Varinder Thakur is running the business. Although there are various brands of spices are available in the market but still even today M.D.H Masala is consumer's first preference around the world.

Secondly, when individuals work together in a family business. It encourage strong family relationships among the family members. Which keeps them strong during the times of setbacks and they can tackle the business related problems easily. For example, when it is often difficult for a person to cover business loss alone and most of the businesses shut down because of financial challenges. However, when all the family memebrs run the business together they always find a solution to combat with problems.

On other side, thesedays youngters are creative and passionate about various fields of career which sometimes look useless to business owner parents. So they insist their children to join family business. Which eventually results conflit among family members. For example, in today's modern society many individuals want to become a singer or actor as they influenced by great TV stars and singer but their parents force them to be a part of family business which eventually make them to leave their home to follow their passion. So parents should try to understand the feelings of their kids.

In my opinion, merits of family business outweigh demerits. Hence it is highly fruitful for the individual to be a part of their own family business to secure a successful future.

To conclude, family business provides people with considerable benefits and bright future. Provided that parents are not forcing their children to join them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and the essay addresses both sides of the question. The points about a potentially stable income and stronger family relationships are relevant, and the MDH example gives the first point some concrete support. The discussion of parents pressuring children also identifies a genuine disadvantage. However, the advantages are not developed equally: the claim that family businesses are less likely to fail is asserted rather than explained, and the example mainly describes the brand’s success without showing how family involvement caused it. The conclusion repeats your view but could more directly weigh the benefits against the risk of conflict. More explanation linking each example to your argument would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and a disadvantage, and a concluding opinion. Sequencing phrases such as “To begin with,” “Secondly,” and “On other side” help readers follow the main stages. Your position is also consistent from the introduction to the conclusion. At times, however, cohesion is mechanical or unclear. Several sentences begin with “Which,” leaving them as fragments and making their connection to the previous idea less smooth. The second advantage paragraph also shifts from family relationships to business losses without a clear transition. Use fewer formulaic signposts and connect claims, explanations, and examples more explicitly within each paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and attempt some less common expressions, including “stable and reliable source of income,” “financial challenges,” and “follow their passion.” These choices help communicate the main ideas. However, noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems limit precision: “stronger roots of family business,” “combat with problems,” and “consumer’s first preference” are not natural in context. There are also misspellings such as “memebrs,” “youngters,” and “conflit,” which can distract the reader. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than adding elaborate phrases; for example, describe a business as “well-established” and say that family members “overcome challenges.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including clauses with “although,” “when,” and “which,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. Some sentences are controlled, such as “So parents should try to understand the feelings of their kids.” However, several errors in sentence structure and agreement remain. “Which will provide the family members…” and “Which keeps them strong…” are dependent clauses presented as complete sentences; join them to the preceding sentence or recast them. In “It encourage strong family relationships,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and “there are various brands … are available” contains an unnecessary second verb. Review sentence boundaries, subject–verb agreement, and article use, while continuing to practise complex sentences.
