Student answer (Band 6.5)

It has been observed globally that family members often work together in their family business. I personally think that this trend has more advantages than disadvantages. My inclination towards it is explained in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, when relatives work together in the same business, the bond between them becomes much stronger on personal level. For example, our family runs a family business and my uncle and my dad get along very well with eachother in their personal life. Additionally, children of the family members do not need to worry about hands on experience or employment. For example, my cousin finsihed her final year internship at our company and that helped her starting her own venture.

On the other hand, some people believe that family business create disputes when things don't go as per plan and children who join their father's family business could never get out of their father's shadow. The earlier statement is true to some extent, but it is not relevant in all instances. I already mentioned my personal example in the first paragraph and just like it many successful businesses in India are run by their family members. For example, Reliance Group is run by Ambani family and they are the richest and most successful business owners in India.

To conclude, It can be said that, being a part of the family business certainly has one or two disadvantages but the advantages overweighs the disadvantages and by keeping few crucial things in mind such as looking at family business as a learning and growing opportunity and not as a source of passive income, can help you achieve great success in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe family businesses have more advantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides by discussing stronger family relationships and opportunities for experience, then acknowledging disputes and the possibility of children remaining in a parent’s shadow. These are relevant points, and the examples from your family and Reliance Group help make the response specific. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the cousin’s internship is said to help her start a venture, but the link between family employment and that outcome could be clearer. The disadvantages are also briefly treated and then dismissed. Develop each point with more explanation to make the argument more consistently convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” makes the progression easy to follow. The main limitation is that some connections feel mechanical or unclear. “The earlier statement” is an imprecise reference, and “I already mentioned my personal example” repeats information rather than smoothly advancing the argument. The conclusion also combines several ideas in one long sentence, making the final recommendation harder to follow. Use more precise references, connect examples directly to the claims they support, and divide complex points into clearer sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “hands on experience,” “disputes,” “venture,” and “passive income.” These choices help communicate relevant ideas, and the meaning remains clear. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “on personal level,” “get out of their father’s shadow,” and “the advantages overweighs the disadvantages.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “eachother” and “finsihed,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe family members as having a “stronger personal bond,” and say that the benefits “outweigh” the drawbacks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “when relatives work together” and “when things don’t go as per plan.” Most of the message is understandable, and the errors do not generally prevent communication. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. In “family business create disputes,” the plural subject requires “businesses create”; “the advantages overweighs” has a subject–verb agreement error; and “on personal level” needs an article. The final sentence is also overloaded, with a long clause beginning “and by keeping few crucial things in mind” that is not smoothly connected to the main statement. Review agreement and articles, and use sentence boundaries to control longer structures.
