In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Doing a family business is the most common trend in many nations. However, I believe, familiy business has more disadvantages than advantages.

Although family owned enterprise can strengthen family bonding, there are higher chances of nepotism and internal conflicts. In a family owned business, higher positions are often given to only family members that undermines other employee's morale because they are less likely to get promotion for a senior position. Perhaps personal issues might have impact on acceptaing a new proposal and giving their perspectives. This situtaion can lead to trust issues, weak bonding and an internal rivalry in the workplace. Additionally, unforeseen circumsrances such as financial loss, bank-cruptancy, or natural disaster can lead to a stressful condition for all as all family members are working in one interprise and they do not have another income source. Consequently, it can result in anxiety, depression or more serious situations. Many cases of enterprenure suicides are examples of family business failures.

However, family business preserve family traditions and provides generational wealth. A sucessful family business can not only pass craftsmanship and practical skills, but also assets like property and industries from one generation to other. For example, Ambani family in India is the richest and most successful family and all family members are working at different positions and running a sucessful and profitable family business sucessfully from 4 generations.

In conclusion, Nevertheless family owned buisness can be sucessful and provides long-term benefits to many generations, its drawbacks such as trust issues, family-rivalary, bank-crupt, or fraud can not be overlooked. It is better to do what a person wants to do, instead of doing what his parents want him to do.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the opening: you believe family businesses have more disadvantages, and the conclusion returns to this view. You address both sides, identifying family bonding and the transfer of traditions and wealth as benefits, while explaining nepotism, conflict and financial risk as drawbacks. The discussion is relevant, and the Ambani example gives the benefits paragraph some support. This reaches beyond a basic response, but development is uneven: the advantages receive only one brief example, and claims such as family members having no other income source or business failure leading to suicide are not sufficiently explained or qualified. To strengthen the response further, develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a specific, carefully connected example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on disadvantages, a paragraph on advantages and a conclusion. The contrast between the two main paragraphs is clear, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “Additionally” and “Consequently” help show relationships between ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. The conclusion begins “Nevertheless” after “In conclusion,” which makes the relationship between the ideas awkward, and “its drawbacks” has an unclear reference. Some sentences also move quickly from one consequence to another without enough explanation. Use transitions more selectively, make pronoun references explicit, and organise each body paragraph around a clear point followed by explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “nepotism,” “morale,” “generational wealth,” “craftsmanship” and “internal rivalry.” These choices show an effort to express specific ideas rather than relying only on basic words. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, for example “familiy,” “acceptaing,” “situtaion,” “enterprenure” and “sucessful.” Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “bank-cruptancy” and “running a successful and profitable family business successfully.” These errors make the writing less fluent and sometimes distract from the argument, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Proofread spelling carefully and check common word partnerships; aim for precise, natural phrasing rather than repeating an idea with several similar adjectives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a cause-and-effect sentence beginning “Consequently.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “family business preserve” and “provides” do not agree with the singular subject, while “all family members are working” is awkward in the context of a general statement. The sentence beginning “In conclusion, Nevertheless” also has faulty punctuation and sentence connection. Articles and possessives need attention in phrases such as “a family owned business” and “other employee's morale.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, article use and sentence boundaries, then proofread complex sentences to ensure their clauses connect correctly.
