Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is very common in many countries where family members works in their family business. Although working together in family business have many drawback as financial risks and lack of professionalism, there are more benefits of this trend as it strengthen family bond, secure future for generations and provides flexibility.

To begin with , there are several compelling reason to support the idea of family members joining their family business. Firstly, It strengthen the family realtionship as members spend more time together at home and at work. There are less chances of misunderstanding between family members. It also provides more flexibility of working hours. For example, if a member wants to take a day-off or extra hours, he has not to worried about taking a day off or requesting for additional shifts from his employer. They can manage these concern at home according to their availiability. Additionally, if family members do their business together, they do not have to worry about traitors who can expose their secret recipe to others or be a victim of fraud regarding mismanagement of money or materials. These reasons explains the advantages of doing family business together.

In contrast, often lack of professionalism can be seen in family business where some got promoted because of their blood relation instead of qualification. Another, crutial disadvantage of working family member together in family business is finacial risk. For instance, if a family business fails, then whole family will see the financial crisis.

In conclusion, although for family members working toghether in family business have more financial risk, there has been more advantages of family business as it provides more flexibility, trust and favourable promotion opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you believe the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and you address both sides of the question. The benefits you identify—stronger family relationships, flexible working arrangements and trust—are relevant, while the discussion of favouritism and shared financial risk gives the opposing view. The example about taking time off helps explain flexibility. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed: the claim that working together reduces misunderstandings needs explanation, and the point about protecting a secret recipe or avoiding fraud is not clearly connected to why family businesses are advantageous. Your conclusion also introduces “favourable promotion opportunities,” which conflicts with your earlier criticism of promotion based on family ties. Clarifying that distinction and extending key examples would make the argument more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting family businesses, a paragraph outlining disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Firstly,” “Additionally,” and “In contrast” helps readers follow the main direction. The progression is generally logical, but some links between ideas are abrupt. For example, the discussion moves from flexible hours to secret recipes and fraud without explaining how these points relate to one another. The conclusion also repeats the benefits but adds promotion opportunities without reconciling this with the earlier criticism of favouritism. Use clearer transitions between distinct reasons and ensure that references such as “these reasons” point to a coherent set of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “financial risks,” “lack of professionalism,” “flexibility,” and “financial crisis.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “secret recipe” and “mismanagement of money or materials.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the phrasing less natural: “realtionship,” “availiability,” “crutial,” and “finacial” are misspelled, while “traitors” is not an appropriate term for people who might reveal business information. Some collocations are awkward, including “do their business together” and “favourable promotion opportunities.” Aim for more precise, natural business vocabulary and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the opening (“Although…”) and conditional examples (“if a family business fails”). The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “family members works” should use a plural verb, and “there are more benefits… as it strengthen” has an agreement error. In “he has not to worried,” the verb pattern is incorrect; a natural form is “he does not have to worry.” The final sentence, “although for family members working together… have more financial risk,” is also difficult to parse. Review subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around clear subjects and verbs.
