Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many parts of the world, family members run a business together. while this arrangement has certain drawbacks, such as disputes sipiling from home to work. I believe its advantages particularly financial security and stronger family bonds, clearly outweigh them. This essay will examine both merits and demerits with well reasoned arguments.

One of the major merits is financial security, all family members working in a common business do not have to struggle in life and look for any job to earn their livielihood. Therefore, they become independent and start to earn at very young age by learning the skills required for their business. For instance, small family run a grocery stores in India often survive for generations because each generation learns the trade early. Moreover, working side by side builds trusts and strengthens relationship betwen relatives.

Nevertheless, on the darker side, any arguments at home can affect the decisions at work and it negatively affect the business as whole. As a result, the job security from youngsters within family can be taken from them because of conflits. Additionally, realtives are hired just on the basis of loyality but not for the skills. Therefore, it results in lack of skilled workers in the business which can ultimately take a toll on the growth a family firm. For instance, Ratan tata was the excellent entrepreneur of his time and he expanded his business in every field, including IT, manfacturing and heathacare. And, after his demise the business is still at the same position.

To recapitulate, although this arrangment has certain demerits such as conflicts and employment of non skilled members , its merits outweigh due to the financil security and building stond realtions between relatives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the question and state a clear view: the benefits of financial security and stronger family relationships outweigh the drawbacks. The body paragraphs give relevant reasons, including family members learning a trade early and disputes affecting business decisions. However, some points are not fully explained. For example, the claim that young relatives may lose job security because of conflicts needs a clearer link to how family ownership creates this risk. The Tata example is also difficult to interpret: it does not clearly show whether the business remained successful or stagnated after Ratan Tata’s death, so it does not effectively support the point about hiring relatives for loyalty rather than skill. Clarifying and developing these examples would make the response more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from financial benefits to family relationships, then to workplace conflicts and hiring practices, is generally easy to follow. You also use a range of linking expressions, such as “Moreover,” “Nevertheless,” and “As a result,” which helps signal relationships between ideas. To make the organisation more effective, ensure each link accurately reflects the logic: the connection between conflicts and loss of job security is not fully explained, and “And” at the start of the final example feels abrupt. Some sentences also join separate claims with commas, which weakens the flow. Clearer transitions and more explicit connections between examples and claims would strengthen cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “family-run,” “loyalty,” “skilled workers,” and “growth.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “take a toll.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word forms are noticeable, including “livielihood,” “conflits,” “realtives,” “manfacturing,” and “financil.” Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “builds trusts” and “building stond realtions,” and “the growth a family firm” is imprecise. These errors sometimes make the reader pause, even though the overall meaning remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships, especially for describing relationships, employment, and business performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “because,” and “which,” and most of your main points remain understandable. However, some sentence structures and grammatical forms are inaccurate. For example, “One of the major merits is financial security, all family members…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; use a full stop or a suitable conjunction. In “it negatively affect the business,” the verb does not agree with its subject, and “a small family run a grocery stores” has problems with articles and singular/plural agreement. Capitalisation and punctuation also need attention, particularly the lowercase “while” after the opening sentence and the fragment-like “And” before the final example. More accurate sentence boundaries and agreement would improve control.
