Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is no doubt that in most of the nations, family members run their family business together. However, I personally believe that the merits are greater than its demerits because working together with a family helps individuals to make their bond stronger, and they also work hard to achieve their targets without any distractions. There are also some bad effects of this concept; in this modern era, technology has developed a lot, and customers' needs and wants change, so working only in their family business is not a good idea because individuals are not aware of what things they need to adapt so their businees run smothly. I will explain these points briefly in the upcoming paragraphs.

To commence with, in many countries, family members run their business together because they think it is a good way to strengthen their bond. Moreover, in this era, the majority of individuals migrate from rural areas to urban areas for a better career and lifestyle, and nowadays, many people have nuclear families; people do not like living with their parents because they think it is hard to take care of their parents. Furthermore, to solve this problem, a family business helps individuals to connect with their loved ones and learn from their experiences because they know the reality of society. Secondly, it is always seen that family businesses are more successful than other businesses because their individuals work hard to achieve their goals, and they know they do not need to divide their profits with outsiders; all the money they earn is their family money.

On the other hand, there are some negative points of this development. Firstly, all family members enrol in the same work that is not good because they all follow the old techniques; they are not aware of modern technology that affects their business a lot. Nowadays, the number of businesses set up all use modern technology that has replaced old methods. In my perspective, if any family member learns about these changes and works in another organisation, then they can save their family business.

In conclusion, working in a family business is an excellent idea because, in this way, conflicts do not occur, but learning modern techniques is also equally important to run a business successfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the advantages of family businesses outweigh the disadvantages, and you address both sides of the question. The benefits of stronger family bonds and shared profits are relevant, while the concern about relying on old techniques provides a counterpoint. However, some ideas are more fully explained than others. For example, the link between family businesses and migration or nuclear families is introduced but not clearly connected to why the business itself is advantageous. The technology drawback is also stated broadly, without a specific example of how outdated methods affect customers or profits. Develop each main point with a clear explanation or example, and make the comparison between the advantages and disadvantages more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to drawbacks is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through clear paragraphing and a consistent central position. However, linking phrases are sometimes mechanical, particularly “To commence with” and “Secondly,” and several ideas are joined in long sentences, making their relationships less clear. For instance, the discussion of migration, nuclear families, and caring for parents moves quickly between points. Use fewer formulaic transitions and make the connection between related ideas more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic, including relevant terms such as “modern technology,” “profits,” “customers’ needs,” and “family business.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the merits are greater than its demerits.” However, word choice and collocation are sometimes inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision. Phrases such as “their family money,” “enrol in the same work,” and “the reality of society” do not express the intended meanings naturally. Spelling errors in “businees” and “smothly” are also noticeable. Aim to use more precise business-related expressions and check spelling; for example, describe family members as “working in the same business” rather than “enrolling in the same work.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “because,” “if,” and “that,” and your meaning is generally clear. The opening sentence and the conditional idea about a family member learning new methods show attempts to express relationships between ideas. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “the merits are greater than its demerits,” the pronoun does not agree with the plural noun; “their” would be appropriate. The sentence beginning “all family members enrol…” also has an unclear structure, and “all the money they earn is their family money” would benefit from a more controlled construction. Review agreement, sentence boundaries, and the structure of long sentences so that complex ideas remain clear.
