In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The culture of joining a family business has become common in many countries. Many people believe that working in a family venture provides significant benefits to individuals. In my opinion, the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages.

The main advantage of this arrangement is that it provides mental relief to many individuals at a young age. This is because by working in family businesses, many people avoid job market competition, which not only decreases their stress but also offers financial security. As a result, this practice can provide them a sense of security because they get a secure job immediately after completing their studies, and they do not need to enter a tough job market competition.

Another significant advantage is that working together in a family business can help in strengthening their personal relationships. When people often work together on common projects with their family members, they naturally feel a deeper bond because they spend a large amount of time with each other. Consequently, this situation contributes to developing a sense of belonging and can fulfill both emotional and financial needs.

However, this practice is not without its drawbacks. To begin with, it may negatively impact individuality. In many countries, people are forced to joing family businesses, even though they do not have any interest in that field; this can lead to anxiety and frustration. For example, many people face family conflicts due to family pressure regarding their careers and personal choices. Gradually, these situations can weaken their relationships substantially, and sometimes impact negatively on business growth.

In conclusion, although family businesses provide job security and mental well-being to many individuals from a young age, they may affect their personal career aspirations and interests.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the advantages of family businesses outweigh the disadvantages, and the conclusion restates this view. You address both sides with relevant points, including job security and stronger family relationships, balanced against pressure to follow an unwanted career. The explanation of job security is reasonably developed, but the relationship benefit is more general, and the disadvantage would be stronger with a specific example showing how pressure affects an individual or business. The conclusion also acknowledges drawbacks without fully explaining why the benefits remain more significant. To strengthen the response, develop each main point with a concrete example and make the comparison between advantages and disadvantages more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised into a clear introduction, two paragraphs on advantages, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. Ideas progress logically, and linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Consequently,” and “However” help signal relationships between points. Paragraphs generally maintain a clear focus. Some connections are repetitive or slightly mechanical: the first advantage repeats the idea of security in “financial security,” “a sense of security,” and “a secure job.” The reference in “this situation” is also somewhat broad, as it could refer to several ideas in the preceding sentence. For a more polished progression, reduce repeated explanations and use more precise references to connect each supporting detail to its main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial security,” “sense of belonging,” “career aspirations,” and “family pressure.” These phrases communicate the main ideas clearly, and some choices show an effort to express abstract concepts. However, several collocations are awkward or repetitive, such as “job market competition” and “mental relief,” while “this development” is less precise for the practice being discussed. There is also a spelling error in “joing.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to use more idiomatic combinations and vary repeated terms; for example, describe competition for jobs and distinguish emotional well-being from financial security.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrate a useful mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “because,” “although,” and “even though.” Many sentences are accurate, such as “When people often work together on common projects with their family members, they naturally feel a deeper bond.” Your punctuation and paragraph-level sentence control are generally sound. A few grammatical choices remain awkward or imprecise, including “at a young age” where the intended meaning appears to be early in a career, and the long sentence beginning “As a result” repeats the same point in a way that makes its structure less controlled. The phrase “impact negatively on business growth” is also grammatically possible but less natural in this construction. Continue using complex structures, while checking that each clause adds a distinct idea and that sentence patterns remain clear.
