IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic:

In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

In lot of nations, many members of one family running business started by their ancesters.

In my point of view, there are more demerits than merits. In family business, there will be more chances of disputes. Every person has their own choice and priorities. If there is business of clothing then there will be a dispute of choice of attires and colours. Old generation will choose the old fashion clothes and new generation will choose the recent trends. Another problem will be the income.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You state a clear position—“there are more demerits than merits”—and introduce relevant concerns about disputes over business decisions and income. However, the response addresses the question only minimally: the income issue is named but not explained, and there is no discussion of possible advantages or a developed example. The clothing and fashion contrast is relevant, but it needs to show how such disagreements affect the business. The response also does not meet the required minimum length, leaving the argument substantially incomplete. To strengthen your answer, explain both sides, support your position with specific examples, and develop each main point with its consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic progression: it introduces the topic, gives your position, and then presents a possible source of conflict. The example about older and younger generations helps clarify the point, and “Another problem” signals a shift to a second idea. However, the response ends before that idea is explained, so the overall argument has no conclusion or complete progression. Connections between claims are also limited; for example, explain how differing clothing preferences could lead to business disputes or affect sales. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons, and conclusion, and link each reason to its explanation with clear referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “family business,” “disputes,” “priorities,” “income,” and “generation,” which makes the main ideas understandable. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “In lot of nations,” “business of clothing,” and “dispute of choice of attires.” The spelling “ancesters” is also incorrect. These choices limit precision, particularly when you try to describe disagreements about products and decisions. Build a more accurate set of phrases for this topic, such as “a family-owned company,” “disagreements over business decisions,” and “clothing preferences,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You communicate your main position using simple sentence forms, and the contrast between older and younger generations is expressed in a way the reader can follow. However, grammatical control is inconsistent. For example, “many members of one family running business” lacks a finite verb, while “In lot of nations” is missing an article. The sentence “If there is business of clothing” also needs a more complete grammatical structure, and the repeated future form “there will be” makes the writing sound formulaic. Practise accurate articles and verb forms, then combine simple statements with controlled complex sentences using “because,” “while,” or “as a result.”
