In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been observed that in many countries, family members involve in running their family business. If asked, I certianly believe that family businesses definitely have more advantages rather than disadvantages. My inclination along with reasons and examples will be elaborated in the forthcoming paragraphs.

The primary reason why family members prefer to join their own family business is the job security. If a person joins an organisation running by his or her family member, he or she do not have to worry about the termination or contract and other clauses of the employment. The person can work as long as he or she desires. This can be a win-win situation for both, the employer gets a reliable preson and the employee gets the job security. Furthermore, there is more chances for the company to grow in the future. This is to say, if all family members work hard and contribute positively, the company will definitely grow in an outstanding manner.

Another benefit of a family business is, less investment and more profit. By this, I mean, the owner of the company does not have to pay higher wages for employees who are outsourced, instead, they can hire their family members based on profit margins or another alternatives. A very good example of this is, many Indian commmunities immigrated to the United States and establised their motel business. Insead of external hiring, they prefered to hire their own family members to run motels and provided them accommodation and other essential things. In return, the empolyees had to work for them and had to look after the business.

To conclude the aforementioned discussion, it can be finally commented that it is indeed a positive trend that in many countries people work together in their family business. I believe that it is not only beneficial for the employees, but it also advantageous for the owner of the business in terms of cheap leabour, relaiblity and the growth of the business itself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe family businesses have more advantages, and the conclusion maintains this view. You give two relevant reasons—job security and lower staffing costs—and support the second with the example of Indian immigrant families running motels in the United States. This addresses the task and provides a sound basis for your argument. However, the first point is explained more generally than specifically: the claim that a family employee can work “as long as he or she desires” would benefit from qualification, since family businesses can also face financial or interpersonal difficulties. The discussion also focuses almost entirely on advantages; briefly acknowledging a disadvantage and explaining why the benefits outweigh it would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate benefits, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “The primary reason,” “Another benefit,” and “To conclude” help readers follow the argument. The motel example is placed appropriately after the point about staffing costs. Some linking is mechanical, however, and a few references are not fully clear. For example, “By this, I mean” does not connect smoothly to the preceding sentence, while “they can hire their family members” leaves the referent of “they” somewhat uncertain. To strengthen progression, use more direct links between each claim and its explanation, and make pronoun references explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of vocabulary relevant to business and employment, including “job security,” “termination,” “profit margins,” and “reliable.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the motel example adds useful specificity. However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, including “certianly,” “preson,” “commmunities,” and “relaiblity.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “less investment and more profit,” “cheap leabour,” and “an organisation running by his or her family member.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, particularly when describing costs, employment, and business growth. The range is adequate for the topic, but greater control would make the argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if all family members work hard” and a relative clause in “employees who are outsourced.” The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “family members involve in running” needs a passive or reflexive construction, “he or she do not have to worry” has subject–verb disagreement, and “there is more chances” has an agreement error. Articles and sentence patterns also need attention in “Another benefit of a family business is, less investment and more profit.” Review agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries, and read each sentence aloud to catch awkward constructions. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity.
