Student answer (Band 6.0)

In several nations, family members work together in their family business. Doing family business can minimize the financial loss bearing per person, however, it may sometimes harm family relationships due to financial conflicts. This essay will discuss how doing family business has more disadvantages than advantages.

On the one hand, when family members work together in a family business, they are likely to share the financial loss. To illustrate this, if 3 brothers work together and face economic loss of 3 lakhs, it can be shared among them equally as 1not lakh each person instead of 3 lakhs for each. Consequently, it can save them from financial burden.

On the other hand, I believe its disadvantages outweigh its advantages. Doing family business can lead to unhealthy relationships. In a family business members have to collaborate and make mutually agreed decisions. However, becasue of their different mindsets and attitude, they sometimes cannot take a common decision which can ultimately harm their relationships. Moreover, in some families where members are forced to join only family business, family conflicts can be persistent because there is no freedom of choice. They cannot follow a different career path such as a job or other artistic career. For example, it can be seen in several Indian families that their males are not allowed to follow their passion, after study they have to continue their family business.

In conclusion, following a family business can help reduce financial burden individually but it can harm family relationships and stop a member to follow his passion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You give a clear answer: the essay argues that the disadvantages of family businesses outweigh the advantages, while acknowledging that sharing losses can reduce each person’s financial burden. The examples about three brothers and Indian families are relevant, and you address both sides of the question. However, the financial example is explained more fully than the disadvantages, while the claims about disagreements and restricted career choices would benefit from more specific consequences or support. The response is also 248 words, below the required minimum of 250; the eight words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop the main reasons a little further and ensure the response meets the minimum length.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting an advantage, a paragraph explaining disadvantages, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the direction of the argument easy to follow. Within the disadvantage paragraph, the ideas progress from decision-making difficulties to pressure to join the business. Some connections are mechanical, however, and the opening sentence of the first body paragraph could link more directly to the essay’s overall position. The conclusion also repeats the main points without adding much synthesis. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each example and its supporting claim more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financial burden,” “mutually agreed decisions,” “career path,” and “follow their passion.” These phrases help communicate the central ideas, and the meaning remains clear despite some inaccurate or unnatural choices. For example, “Doing family business” is repeated and is less natural than “running a family business,” while “financial loss bearing per person” is awkwardly formed. There are also spelling errors, including “becasue,” and the phrase “1not lakh” appears to contain a typing or word-choice problem. Aim for more precise collocations and proofread carefully so that vocabulary attempts sound natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional phrasing (“if 3 brothers work together…”) and a subordinate clause beginning “because of their different mindsets.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the argument is generally easy to understand. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “stop a member to follow his passion” uses an incorrect verb pattern; write “stop a member from following their passion.” In “after study they have to continue,” the article and sentence structure need attention, and “a job or other artistic career” would benefit from parallel phrasing. Review verb patterns, articles, and punctuation around introductory clauses, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
