In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In many countries, families choose to work in a family business rather than getting a job in different sectors. I think working in a family business has more benefits than drawbacks.

One of the main advantage is takeover of running business. When people have their own family business that is running profitably, there is no need to make heavy investments or conduct research. A profitable running business can help people to grow more in the market easily instead of starting from the beginning. Families also feel proud to pass the business to the new generation.

People also do not need to spend time on job searches. Becoming the owner of an already established business helps them avoid the stress of job searching in today's competitive world. People does not need to spent time and money to give exams to get white colour job . As a result, they become owner without having high qualifications.

However, a family business has the disadvantage of sometimes not choosing a career of one's own choice. Many people are forced to join a family business, despite their interest in a different sector. That can lead not only to health issues like stress but also to losses in business. People should have the freedom to choose a career of their own choice.

In conclusion, while a family business gives pride to take over profitable business cutting down the cost of study and job search. It also has disadvantages when forced to join. A positive approach should be adopted so that joining a family business benefits both the individual and the business.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe family businesses have more benefits than drawbacks. You give relevant reasons, including taking over an established, profitable business and avoiding the pressure of job searches, and you acknowledge the counterargument that people may be pushed into careers they do not want. This addresses both sides of the question. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained: for example, the claim that taking over a business helps people “grow more in the market” would be stronger with a specific explanation or example. The disadvantage is also less developed than the advantages. Explain how family members can protect individual choice while still benefiting from the business to make your position more fully supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting advantages, a paragraph on a disadvantage, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to a counterargument is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “However” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. This organisation is effective, though some connections between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “As a result” introduces a consequence, but the link between avoiding job searches and becoming an owner without high qualifications needs clearer explanation. The conclusion also compresses several ideas into one sentence. Use more precise referencing and develop transitions between claims so the argument flows more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “profitable,” “competitive,” “qualifications,” and “career.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “heavy investments” and “established business,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. Phrases such as “grow more in the market,” “takeover of running business,” and “white colour job” make parts of the argument less fluent; “white-collar job” is the conventional expression. There is some repetition of “business” and “job,” and several word forms or collocations need attention. Build a more flexible range of accurate business vocabulary and check that words combine naturally in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and more complex forms, including “When people have their own family business…” and “despite their interest in a different sector.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “One of the main advantage” needs a plural noun, while “People does not need” and “to spent time” show problems with agreement and verb forms. Articles and sentence boundaries also need more control: the final paragraph runs “job search. It” together, and the conclusion contains an incomplete or awkwardly connected structure. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, infinitives, articles, and punctuation, while retaining the complex sentence patterns you already attempt.
