IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Write about the following topic:

In many countries, family members work together in their family business.

Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In most countries, businesses are primarily owned by family. While some people believe that it is advantageous to strengthen the bond and expand the business, others argue that this would result to conflict and future issues. In my own perspective, a family owned business has more benefits that being solely owned.

Nowadays, people tend to work well with people whom they can trust and are more familiar with. For instance, a person would particularly consult his parents or siblings for some business advice rather than asking friends. Aside from advices, people could also get financial assistance from their family. This could be very beneficial especially if you don't have the enough funds or resources to start up the business. In addition to these, a family can be reliable people who can give a strong foundation support may it be morally and emotionally.

On the other hand, with over familiarity people could also get scammed by their own family member. For example, a friend of mine got scammed by her own bestfriend. She stated that her bestfriend stole a huge amount of money from her bank account which resulted to business loss and bankruptcy. This can be true to some people and it's quite sad that this is actually happening in real life scenarios.

Overall, I'd say that having a business is really tough especially choosing the right people who will help you manage it. However, I'd say its adviceable to trust your own family. Families can work hand in hand and succeed significantly. As long as both parties are trustworthy and cooperative, everything will be fine.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe family businesses have more benefits, and you give relevant reasons, including trust, advice, financial help, and emotional support. You also acknowledge a disadvantage through the example of a friend whose business suffered after a family member stole money. However, the response does not fully develop the comparison asked for. The positive points are mostly listed rather than explained in detail, and the example of a best friend is not clearly connected to the specific dynamics of a family business. The conclusion says families can succeed if they are trustworthy and cooperative, but this condition could be weighed more explicitly against the risks. Develop one or two reasons with clearer explanation and directly compare the overall advantages and disadvantages.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph presenting advantages, a paragraph on a disadvantage, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to risks is easy to follow, and signposts such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “Overall” help guide the reader. Some connections are less clear or feel mechanical. For example, “Aside from advices” introduces another benefit, but the relationship between the points could be developed more smoothly; “In addition to these” also leads into an awkwardly formed sentence. The conclusion repeats the recommendation to trust family without fully synthesising the earlier comparison. Use clearer links between each reason and its explanation, and make references such as “this” more specific so the reader can immediately identify the idea being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “financial assistance,” “foundation support,” “business loss,” and “bankruptcy,” which helps communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “work hand in hand” and “succeed significantly.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “result to conflict,” “the enough funds,” “strong foundation support,” and “adviceable.” “Advices” is also not the appropriate form of the noun in this context. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check word forms; for example, use “lead to conflict,” “enough funds,” and “advisable” or “wise.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While some people believe…” and a conditional sentence beginning “As long as both parties…”. Most of the meaning remains clear, and the paragraph structure supports understanding. Some grammatical errors remain. In “a family can be reliable people,” the singular subject does not agree with the plural complement; “a family can provide reliable support” would be clearer. The phrase “a strong foundation support may it be morally and emotionally” also has an unclear grammatical structure, and “a family owned business” needs a hyphen when used before a noun. Review agreement, sentence construction, and punctuation around introductory phrases. More consistently controlled complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
