Student answer (Band 6.0)

Running a family- owned and operated business is becoming very famous these days in all the corners of the world.

Its having a both advantages and disadvantages. I opine that there are more prose then cons. According to my thinking, working together with our family members gives us the strength and unity that we are lacing these days. It is also beneficial in becoming financially strong, especially in todays world of competition where people are hardly able to find a job, a family business like this can help someone to become employed. Further, such kind of generational businesses also provide an opportunity to grow with all kind of support. Last but not the least, as most of the people working are the family members so, we can have an excellent level of trust on them which further directly or indirectly help in personal as well as professional development.

As coin has both sides likewise, it also have some loopholes. Some times it becomes difficult for someone with a different career background to work in a family runed enterprise. Secondly, it may put a negative impact on the relations of the family members. Lastly, as far as the society is concerned by just hiring the relatives it may reduce the job opportunity for the other skilled professional.

For instance, I have a friend in my home country working restaurant business stared by his grandfather. He is enjoying his work as he is also having the same culinary background. He is able to get more and easier career growth compared to his fellow classmates.

To conclude, generational businesses are having more advantages then disadvantages, but a person needs to do the same amount of hard work as he/she does for a new enterprise to have the reliable amount of growth of the business as well as of the person him/her self.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you believe family businesses have more advantages, and you address both benefits and drawbacks. Relevant points include employment, financial security, trust among relatives, and possible effects on family relationships and wider job opportunities. The restaurant example helps make the argument more concrete. This meets the task well, but some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that working with relatives provides “strength and unity” would be stronger with a brief explanation of how this improves the business. The disadvantages are also listed quickly, with little discussion of when they might outweigh the benefits. Develop one or two key points with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on advantages, one on disadvantages, a personal example, and a conclusion. The reader can follow your main position, and signposts such as “Further,” “Secondly,” and “To conclude” help show the sequence. However, some linking is mechanical, and several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly in the advantages paragraph. The transition “As coin has both sides likewise” is also awkward and does not connect the point smoothly. The example is relevant, but its relationship to the preceding discussion could be made more explicit. Use fewer formulaic transitions and connect each paragraph’s ideas through clearer references and explanations.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “generational businesses,” “career background,” “skilled professional,” and “financially strong.” These choices show an effort to discuss the issue beyond basic terms. However, inaccurate or unnatural word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “becoming very famous” for businesses, “more prose then cons,” “family runed enterprise,” and “reliable amount of growth.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “lacing” and “stared” also reduce precision. Aim for familiar, accurate collocations rather than forcing less natural phrases—for example, describe a business as “increasingly common” and say it “offers reliable growth prospects.” Proofreading will help you use your vocabulary more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and longer sentences with subordinate clauses, such as the sentence beginning “It is also beneficial in becoming financially strong,” so there is some structural variety. The main ideas remain understandable, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction are persistent. Examples include “Its having a both advantages,” “it also have some loopholes,” and “a family business like this can help someone to become employed,” where the structure is awkward. The long sentence beginning “where people are hardly able to find a job” also needs clearer punctuation and clause boundaries. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement and complete, controlled sentences; then use complex structures selectively and check each clause for a clear subject and verb.
