In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often noticed in several countries that relatives in a family work together in their own business. In my opinion, there are more number of advantages than disadvantages because it provides a certain chance to pass the firm on to the next generation. Another benefit is it helps them to improve their relationship and stick together in difficult times.
Firstly, people who manage to employee family members in their own enterprise have an opportunity to carry forward their legacy. Furthermore, it makes sure that the business will not shut down after the extinction of first generation. For instance, if a small local shop run by a father and daughter, there is always an option to continue the business effectively by the daughter; even after the father's retirement.
Secondly, the family members who always work together will have a strong bond and better understanding between them, whenever there is a downfall in the business. The time they have spend developing the business collaboratively will provide an extra care for each other. For example, people facing a bad day at the company will not affect their behavior, resulting a positive attitude towards each other when they are outside or having a family time at their house.
In conclusion, I believe that it is always a better opinion to work together in a company which is established by a own family member since it opens a window for business development. Additionally, it creates a friendly work environment making it a comfortable job position for the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe family businesses have more advantages, and you give two relevant reasons—passing the business to the next generation and strengthening family relationships. The examples of a father and daughter running a shop and relatives supporting one another help connect these points to the topic. However, the first advantage is explained more fully than the second, whose claim that working together creates a stronger bond needs clearer development. The response also gives little attention to possible disadvantages, even though the question asks you to compare advantages and disadvantages. To strengthen the argument, briefly acknowledge a drawback, such as family disagreements affecting business decisions, and explain why the benefits still outweigh it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signposted with “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion. This makes the progression easy to follow, and examples are placed alongside the relevant reasons. The linking is generally effective, though it sometimes feels mechanical because the paragraphs rely heavily on sequence markers such as “Furthermore” and “For instance.” Some connections between ideas could also be clearer: the sentence about a “bad day at the company” and behaviour at home does not fully explain how this demonstrates a stronger family bond. Use more precise referencing and show the cause-and-effect link explicitly. A brief paragraph or sentence addressing disadvantages would also make the argument’s progression more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “enterprise,” “legacy,” “generation,” and “business development.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, but several choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. For example, “employee family members” uses the wrong form, while “extinction of first generation” is not an appropriate way to describe the older generation leaving the business. Phrases such as “more number of advantages,” “better opinion,” and “a own family member” also sound awkward. Aim for natural collocations and accurate word forms, especially when expressing the central argument. The meaning is generally recoverable, but more precise vocabulary would make the response clearer and more fluent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “if,” and “whenever.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, some grammatical errors occur in both sentence formation and verb patterns. For example, “if a small local shop run by a father and daughter” lacks a main verb, and “The time they have spend” has an incorrect verb form. In “resulting a positive attitude,” the participle construction is incomplete, while “established by a own family member” contains an article error. Review sentence completeness, verb forms, and articles, then proofread each sentence to improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
