Student answer (Band 6.0)

Similar to a coin having 2 sides, this essay will argue that Family Business has it's own upsides and downsides.

To begin with, there are multiple reasons of several countries supporting family business. The prime reason of this according to me could be the bond in the family members and the knowledge that has been passed to all the generations since their childhood. In addition, to support this let me bring to you a recent example. There was a family in my home town who had the family business of producing pumps. Now, this business has been generational old and with people coming up the new ideas also comes into consideration for the growth of the business. So, recently they developed an automation in their plant to produce pumps and not only was the result accurate but it was time and energy saving as well. Additionally, with this development in their family business, the business grew a lot and was also rewarded with one of the best and modern industrialist award by the government of Gujarat.

It is important to consider that Family Business has it's own disadvantages as well. So, one of the prime reason could be jealousy amongst each other. One notable instance, here is that there was multiple businesses owned by a father and he distributed this 3 businesses among their 3 sons each. Now, each of the business had it's own challenges. So, with the hard work and perseverance of two of their sons the business survived all the challenges and started benefiting where as the third business could not survive and went in loss. Eventually, this gave rise to jealousy and rivalry in the family.

I would like to conclude this discussion, with my beliefs and that is if you are not a risk taker in the family it is always advisable to do a job instead so that you do not have a fear of it's profit or loss and the challenges that comes across each day.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both sides of the question and give relevant examples: the pump-making business illustrates how shared knowledge and new ideas can support growth, while the story of the three sons shows how unequal outcomes may create rivalry. However, the task asks you to decide whether advantages outweigh disadvantages, and your opening only says family businesses have “upsides and downsides.” The conclusion shifts to advice about choosing a job if one is not a risk-taker, rather than clearly weighing the two sides and stating which is stronger. Some reasoning is also under-developed, particularly how family bonds or inherited knowledge directly benefit the business. State your judgement clearly and connect each example to that judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for advantages, one for disadvantages, and a conclusion. The examples are placed in relevant paragraphs, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In addition,” and “Eventually” help readers follow the discussion. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive, especially the repeated use of “So” and “Additionally.” References such as “this” in “he distributed this 3 businesses” are not always clear, and the conclusion does not follow smoothly from the comparison because it introduces advice about taking a job instead. Use more precise referencing and make the final paragraph summarise your position on which side outweighs the other.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “generational,” “automation,” “perseverance,” “rivalry,” and “challenges.” These choices help explain both business development and family conflict, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several awkward or inaccurate collocations, such as “reasons of several countries supporting family business,” “generational old,” and “one of the best and modern industrialist award.” “Upsides and downsides” is understandable but informal for this essay. Aim for more natural academic phrasing and check word forms and collocations; for example, describe a business as “passed down through generations” and an award as “a government award for industrial innovation.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “where” and “if,” and the longer example sentences communicate a sequence of events. Some grammatical errors remain, though they rarely prevent understanding. Examples include “Family Business has it's own” (possessive “its” and agreement), “the new ideas also comes” (subject–verb agreement), and “the challenges that comes across each day” (plural agreement and sentence construction). There are also problems with articles and number, as in “there was multiple businesses” and “this 3 businesses.” Review agreement, singular and plural forms, and possessive pronouns. Breaking up some long sentences would also help you maintain control while still using complex structures.
