In many countries, family members work together in their family business.
Do you think family businesses have more advantages than disadvantages?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In various nations, businesses are owned and operated by family members together. I reckon that having relatives as coworkers has benefits, and they outweigh the demerits. Although non-family employees may work more sincerely, family members can easily trust each other, and they can work cooperatively compared to strangers.
On the one hand, individuals who belong to one home and work at the same place can rely on each other. Since the relatives work at the same office, they can trust each other for crucial tasks. For instance, if one person wants to finish important work, then he can delegate the company's funding and projects to a member of the household. Consequently, a person can complete other assignments without any worries. Additionally, family members can cooperate with each other effortlessly. While they are facing any disagreement in certain projects, they can solve them without getting upset with each other. Moreover, they do not take much salary because of their own business, and it is beneficial for the company's financial growth. Hence, having family as a team member has more perks.
On the other hand, having relatives as colleagues has some negligible drawbacks. One disadvantage is that they may not work with discipline. For example, when people work at their own company, they do not focus on essential tasks as much as paid employees. However, it can be overcome with some necessary steps.
In a nutshell, even though family members are less attentive in terms of paying attention to projects compared to salaried employees, they are always trustworthy to do business together, and they can cooperate without any terms and take less wages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear from the introduction: you believe the benefits of family businesses outweigh the drawbacks. You address both sides, giving relevant points about trust, cooperation, lower wage costs and possible lack of discipline. The example of delegating funding and projects helps illustrate trust, and the conclusion restates your view. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the claim that relatives can resolve disagreements without becoming upset needs a clearer explanation or a specific example, while the drawback of poor discipline is only briefly mentioned and the proposed solution is not identified. Develop these points with more precise reasoning so that each part of your argument is supported consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for advantages and disadvantages, and a concluding summary. The progression from trust to cooperation and then financial benefits is generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “On the one hand,” “Additionally,” and “In a nutshell” to signal relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, several transitions feel formulaic, and the final sentence combines multiple points without showing their relationship clearly. References such as “they” and “it” can also be vague. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make sure each paragraph develops one central point in a clearly connected sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, including “delegate,” “crucial tasks,” “financial growth,” and “drawbacks.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and you attempt some less common expressions. At times, however, word choice or collocation is awkward: “belong to one home,” “work more sincerely,” and “without any terms” do not express the intended meanings naturally. “Perks” is also rather informal for this essay, while “negligible drawbacks” understates the disadvantage you describe. These inaccuracies do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and control. Aim for natural topic-specific combinations and choose words that accurately reflect the strength of each point.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses beginning with “Although,” “Since,” and “While.” Most sentences communicate their meaning clearly, and punctuation generally supports the organisation. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “While they are facing any disagreement” uses an unsuitable clause pattern; “when they face a disagreement” would be more accurate. In “they can solve them,” the pronoun does not agree clearly with the singular “a disagreement.” The final sentence also has an awkwardly constructed comparison and coordination, making the relationships between its ideas less clear. Continue using complex structures, but check clause formation, pronoun reference, and sentence balance during revision.
