Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter on behalf of the Passion Entertainment Ltd and would like to invite you to inaugurate our newly built theatre which is opening in Mumbai east zone next month.
The new theatre is equipped with sate-of-art digital technology. It has a top quality surround sound system to provide crystal clear voice. In addition to this, the seats are much more comfortable and some sections of the theatre have recliners to enjoy a pleasurable movie-watching experience.
I would like to request you to visit and open the theatre for public use by performing the ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a short speech. It will be an honour for our company and stakeholders to share the stage with one of the best movie star in the world.
You have been contributing to the Indian cinema industry for more than 25 years now and we have planned a premiere your first movie "DDLJ" as a part of our inauguration event. Moreover, I believe you will be an ideal person to open this theatre as we have decided to name the theatre as "Shahrukh's paradise" which is inspired by your screen name.
I request you to kindly accept our invitation.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You provide clear information about the new theatre, including its location and technological features. The invitation is explicit, and you provide a logical, persuasive reason for why the actor is the ideal person to open the venue, specifically linking it to his career and the theatre's name. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations match; since you addressed the letter to a specific person (implied by the context), 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic, and 'Yours faithfully' is typically used when the recipient's name is unknown.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Moreover', and 'as a part of' to link your sentences and ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the invitation and the justification is clearly established, making the overall structure very coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'inaugurate', 'stakeholders', and 'pleasurable movie-watching experience'. There are some minor errors, such as 'sate-of-art' (should be 'state-of-the-art') and 'movie star' (should be plural 'movie stars'). While the vocabulary is sufficient and generally precise, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to formal correspondence would elevate the score. The word choice is generally natural and fits the context of an entertainment company's professional communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'planned a premiere your first movie' (missing 'of') and 'the best movie star' (should be plural). Punctuation is generally accurate, though ensure consistent use of articles. The control of grammar is strong, and the errors present are non-systematic and do not detract from the overall professional tone of the letter.
