Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to formally invite you to our opening ceremony. My company plans to setup a new theatre by next month and I would like you to be our guest for the occasion.
Our previous theatre is used for different events, however, my company is trying to expand to accommodate everyone. This present art room is close to the old one with a bigger compound. It comprises of different segments to sooth every unit. It is a modern and updated version of the previous one.
I am inviting you to join us as we open the new theatre on 3rd of September. I would want you to open the new theatre and be our guest speaker for the events. You would address and educate the public on that day.
I know you are the right person for the opening ceremony because you are famous and known for this job. You are a model to the younger generation who would like to follow your path of career.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks for your consideration.
Yours faithful,
Lynda.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provide information about the new theatre, extend a clear invitation, and explain why the actor is a suitable choice. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the description of the theatre as having a 'bigger compound' and 'different segments' is vague. To improve, you should provide more specific details about the theatre's features or the nature of the opening ceremony to better engage the reader. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request, though the opening 'Dear Sir' is generic; using a name would be more professional.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'however' and 'because', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the theatre and the invitation could be smoother. Additionally, the use of referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as 'this present art room', which does not clearly link back to the theatre mentioned in the previous paragraph. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'formally', 'ceremony', and 'accommodate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'setup' should be written as two words ('set up') when used as a verb, and 'sooth' is a misspelling of 'suit'. The phrase 'follow your path of career' is also slightly unnatural; 'follow in your footsteps' or 'pursue a similar career path' would be more idiomatic. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'My company plans to setup a new theatre' contains a phrasal verb error, and 'It comprises of' is incorrect usage (comprise does not take 'of'). You also have a minor error in '3rd of September', which should be 'the 3rd of September'. The closing 'Yours faithful' is incorrect; the standard formal sign-off is 'Yours faithfully'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication.
