Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: providing information about the theatre, extending the invitation, and explaining why the actor is a suitable choice. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening salutation is slightly redundant. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of why the actor is a good choice focuses heavily on marketing rather than the actor's artistic contribution or connection to the theatre. To reach a higher band, the ideas could be expanded with more specific details or a more sophisticated rationale for the invitation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, although the sentence structure in the second paragraph is a bit disjointed, which slightly affects the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is coherent throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'inauguration ceremony' and 'venture'. However, there are also some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'limited for only 200 people' and 'many people follows you'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. To improve, the student should focus on more natural collocations and ensure subject-verb agreement when using more complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a one theater', 'the new theater') and subject-verb agreement ('many people follows you'). The sentence structure in the second paragraph is also slightly awkward ('Although there is already a one theater of our in the city, but is not limited...'). Despite these errors, the writer demonstrates a sufficient grasp of grammar to communicate effectively, and the errors do not cause confusion for the reader.
